This generation of Toyota RAV4 3 has been produced from January, 2006 to January, 2009. We can provide information about 5 modifications of this generation. 2006 Toyota RAV4 comes with four wheel drive (4x4). Four wheel drive models have AWD (all wheel drive) system (power is automatically distributed between the wheel axles).
In 2006, the third generation of the Toyota RAV4 was launched on an all-new platform. Compared to the second RAV4, the car was slightly taller and wider. The three-door version was discontinued in the third generation.
The interior of the third generation RAV4 is of a higher quality and more spacious than that of the previous model. The distance between the front and rear seats has been increased by 55 mm and there is more shoulder and headroom. The rear seat is split into two unequal parts (60:40)
All-wheel drive has been replaced from permanent to front-wheel drive with switchable rear-wheel drive. Rear axle has viscous coupling which is electronically activated and engages the rear axle when the front wheels slip, or at the driver's request. When the rear-wheel drive is engaged by a button on the front panel, the clutch is activated and the car becomes all-wheel drive. However, as the car does not have an center differential, all-wheel drive should only be engaged off tarmac roads or on slippery surfaces to prevent damage to the transmission. A temperature sensor is fitted to prevent overheating of the viscous coupling. The electronics disengage the rear axle at speeds above 40 km/h and if the viscous coupling overheats due to active slipping of the rear wheels. The disadvantage of this is that when stuck off-road due to the rear clutch overheating (as result of wheel slip) car quickly becomes a front-wheel drive car.
The engine range has been extended: a powerful 2.4-litre petrol engine has been introduced and the two-litre petrol engine has been upgraded to 152 hp. The third generation RAV4 was also equipped with a new 2.2-litre D-4D diesel engine with 136 hp (177 hp turbocharged). In the American market, an atmospheric 3.5-litre engine with 200 hp was offered. Transmissions remained the same as the previous generation, with two transmissions: a 5-speed manual and a 4-speed automatic.
Safety is ensured by seven airbags (base version) and the Integrated Active Drive safety system, which coordinates the stabilisation system, all-wheel drive and electric power steering. In the Euro NCAP safety rating, the Toyota RAV4 received four stars out of a maximum of five, as well as three stars for pedestrian safety.
This Toyota is available with two petrol engines with displacement from 2.0 to 2.4 litres and power of from 152 to 170 horsepower un two diesel engines with displacement 2.2 litres and power of from 136 to 177 horsepower. All engines feature a timing chain-driven camshaft, which is considered a more reliable and less maintenance-intensive solution (What is an engine chain and belt?).
The car is available with both manual (3 versions), as well as automatic (2 versions) gearbox.

Pros: In winter, if you drive smart and consider where you could realistically go, you could go anywhere. Relatively good fuel consumption. Very good convertibility, both for passengers and cargo. Very robust suspension. Engine, clutch and transmission are robust.
Cons: Low sound insulation, the suspension is quite hard as cost for its high durability, the body metal is too thin, the steering wheel was "empty" - but you get used to it with time. On crosswind is not very stable on the road because it is too short. Noisy diesel engine. Too thin sheet metal for exhaust and fuel filler pipe. Rattling tailgate with spare wheel. Engine slightly underpowered especially on the expressway or on a packed road when the car is full and has to overtake. Without xenon, optics too weak, even with more powerful bulbs. Reversing visibility poor, would be good if parking sensors.
