This generation of Toyota RAV4 2 (facelift model) has been produced from January, 2003 to January, 2006. We can provide information about 7 modifications of this generation. 2003 Toyota RAV4 is available with four wheel (4x4) drive (5 versions) and front wheel drive (2 versions). Four wheel drive models have AWD (all wheel drive) system (power is automatically distributed between the wheel axles).
The second generation Toyota RAV 4 entered production in spring 2000. Compared to the previous generation, the interior was more spacious, while retaining virtually the same exterior dimensions. The front seats have three adjustment options and a wide range of longitudinal adjustment. The rear seats are multifunctional and have separate adjustments (longitudinal and tilt), but taller people still have to make a serious effort to find the most comfortable seat adjustments. The boot has several side pockets but a rather low loading height. The rear seats fold down to increase the load compartment space.
The second generation RAV 4 is powered by a 1,998 litre DOHC VVT-i petrol engine with 150 hp. The three-door version of the RAV 4 is equipped with a 1.8-litre petrol engine with 128 hp, but this engine is slightly underpowered for comfortable driving. Since June 2001, the cars have been equipped with a 2-litre 116 hp turbo-diesel D-4D engine, which accelerates the RAV 4 to 100 km/h in 12 seconds.
The second generation RAV 4 handles very well. The car handles confidently even at high speeds, responding quickly and precisely to the slightest movement of the steering wheel. But the independent McPherson suspension replicates the road profile and undulations quite accurately. The car is equipped with a permanent all-wheel drive system using a viscous clutch. The second generation RAV 4 can be equipped with a five-speed manual gearbox or a four-speed automatic transmission (only the manual version is available for the D4D turbodiesel).
The basic R2 package includes an adjustable steering column, adjustable driver's seat height, heated front seats, electric package, folding rear seat, air conditioning, radio, front airbags, ABS, fog lights, alloy wheels and remote central locking. This version is available in three-door and five-door versions. The R4 option includes heated door mirrors, self-locking rear axle differential, 235/60 R16 tyres and fender extensions. The R5 Luxury version has a leather interior.
At the end of 2003, the model received visual upgrades (bumpers, radiator grille and optics) and a new engine version was added: a 2.4-litre, 167 hp petrol engine.
Like Toyota, the RAV 4 is reliable and does not require frequent repairs, but when repairs are necessary (most often transmission and electronics problems), spare parts are quite expensive.
This Toyota is available with three petrol engines with displacement from 1.8 to 2.4 litres and power of from 125 to 161 horsepower un one diesel engine with displacement 2.0 litres and power of 116 HP.

Pros: In winter, if you drive smart and consider where you could realistically go, you could go anywhere. Relatively good fuel consumption. Very good convertibility, both for passengers and cargo. Very robust suspension. Engine, clutch and transmission are robust.
Cons: Low sound insulation, the suspension is quite hard as cost for its high durability, the body metal is too thin, the steering wheel was "empty" - but you get used to it with time. On crosswind is not very stable on the road because it is too short. Noisy diesel engine. Too thin sheet metal for exhaust and fuel filler pipe. Rattling tailgate with spare wheel. Engine slightly underpowered especially on the expressway or on a packed road when the car is full and has to overtake. Without xenon, optics too weak, even with more powerful bulbs. Reversing visibility poor, would be good if parking sensors.
