Renault Grand Scenic 2012 1.6 dCi

Renault Grand Scenic 2012 1.6 diesel description

Minivan / MPV Renault Grand Scenic 2012 1.6 dCi has been produced from January, 2012 to January, 2013. It has four-cylinder diesel engine with displacement of 1.6 litres, which produces power of 130 horsepower on 4000 rpm and torque 320 Nm (Newton metres) on 1750 revolutions per minute.

This 4-cylinder 16-valve engine camshaft is driven by chain (What is an engine chain and belt? ). Engine has Common Rail fuel system, this is an atmospheric engine (without turbine). Engine versions compliant with Euro 5 and Euro 6 emission standards available. Engine lifespan (mileage before major repairs or overhaul) can last from 220 up to 370 thousand kilometres. Remember that engine life depends on regular maintenance and the quality of the materials used (oils, fuels, etc.).

Engine reliability and common problems:

This 1.6-liter diesel engine is a joint development by Renault-Nissan engineers. It features a cast-iron block, a 16-valve cylinder head with hydraulic lifters, a chain-driven timing system, and a Bosch Common Rail fuel injection system.

The engine is praised for its impressive power output for its size, relatively low fuel consumption, and long service life when properly maintained.

However, it has several notable weaknesses. The timing chain tends to stretch as early as 140,000–150,000 km, despite the system being theoretically designed for 250,000 km. If the chain skips a tooth on the sprocket, it almost always results in bent valves and a costly engine repair.

Another widespread issue is the rapid clogging of the EGR system—this engine is equipped with two EGR valves—which, along with the DPF filter, requires frequent servicing. The engine is also known for oil leaks, commonly occurring around the valve cover, timing chain area, and oil filter housing seals.

Owners frequently report exhaust fumes entering the cabin, often due to failure of the EGR system heat exchanger, which stops effectively routing gases and allows them to leak.

Additionally, a large-scale recall was conducted between 2015 and 2017 to replace a fragile exhaust gas recirculation pipe that was prone to cracking under temperature fluctuations. This issue primarily affected Twin-Turbo versions of the engine.
Overall, this engine can last around 220,000 to 370,000 km if properly maintained, using the correct quality oil and fuel, and carrying out regular checks and maintenance.
The engine has hydraulic valve tappets (lifters), which provide quieter operation and do not require periodic adjustment, but are more complex in design and can cause serious engine damage in the event of failure.

Camshaft drive Timing chain

Chain motors are considered more reliable, chain replacement usually is required less often than a timing belt, but they are often louder and vibrate more.

Timing chain change interval 200,000 km (recommended)

Sometimes manufacturers do not specify timing chain replacement intervals and design chains for engine life. However, once the recommended change interval has been reached, it is recommended to periodically check the condition of the chain and to change the chain if excessive stretching is detected or if unusual noises from the engine or other symptoms occur.

Fuel system Common Rail

Common rail fuel injection provides more engine power, is quieter, more environmentally friendly and offers better fuel economy, but is more expensive to maintain and repair.

Generally, the use of an engine in several models and its long production run is an indication of the quality of the engine and the success of its design.
