Nissan X-Trail 2017 1.6 dci 4WD

Nissan X-Trail 2017 1.6 diesel description

Crossover / SUV Nissan X-Trail 2017 1.6 dci 4WD has been produced from January, 2017 to December, 2018. It has four-cylinder diesel engine with displacement of 1.6 litres, which produces power of 130 horsepower on 4000 rpm and torque 320 Nm (Newton metres) on 1750 revolutions per minute.

This 4-cylinder 16-valve engine camshaft is driven by chain (What is an engine chain and belt? ). Engine has Common Rail fuel system, this is an atmospheric engine (without turbine). Engine versions compliant with Euro 5 and Euro 6 emission standards available. Engine lifespan (mileage before major repairs or overhaul) can last from 220 up to 370 thousand kilometres. Remember that engine life depends on regular maintenance and the quality of the materials used (oils, fuels, etc.).

Nissan X-Trail 2017 1.6 dci 4WD has AWD (all wheel drive) (power is automatically distributed between the wheel axles) and manual gearbox with 6 gears. It has selectable four-wheel drive with Auto, 2WD and Lock modes. In Auto mode, it has front-wheel drive under normal conditions, the rear axle engages when the front wheels start to slip, and power is distributed variably up to 50:50 front to rear. In 2WD mode, the transfer clutch is permanently unlocked, but the electronic control unit can engage the rear wheels occasionally, for example during hard acceleration. In Lock mode, the transfer clutch is permanently locked, providing a constant 50:50 power distribution. When vehicle speed increases above 30 km/h (20 mph), it switches to Auto mode, but when speed decreases, it switches back to Lock mode. The system also switches to 2WD mode in the event of overheating.
Nissan X-Trail 2017 1.6 dci 4WD accelerates to speed 100 kilometres per hour in 11 seconds. The maximum speed of this car is 186 km/h.

Nissan X-Trail 2017 1.6 dci 4WD fuel consumption is 5.3 litres per 100km in combined city/highway mode (18.9 km/l) - this is one of most fuel efficient Nissan X-Trail 2017 versions, fuel consumption in city - 6.2 l/100km, highway fuel economy - 4.8 l/100km. Fuel tank capacity is 60 litres or 15.85 gallons, which gives a mileage up to 1120 kilometers without refueling in urban cycle and even up to 1240 kilometers on highway.
According to user reviews, this Nissan real everyday fuel consumption is 6.6 litres per 100 km, which is 25% more than the manufacturer's stated. More - Real Nissan X-Trail fuel consumption.

With the same engine there are also two other Nissan X-Trail versions - with front wheel drive and manual gearbox (Nissan X-Trail 2017 1.6 dci 2WD MT), and with front wheel drive and automatic gearbox (Nissan X-Trail 2017 1.6 dci 2WD AT) available:
  • Nissan X-Trail 2017 1.6 dci 2WD MT is more dynamic - it reaches 100 km/h 0.5 seconds faster (in 10.5 seconds), but manufacturer's fuel consumption is lower by 0.4 litres per 100 km or 8 % - 4.9 litres per 100 km, whereas users reported real fuel consumption is similar - 6.6 litres per 100 km
  • Nissan X-Trail 2017 1.6 dci 2WD AT is more sluggish, reaching 100 km/h 0.4 seconds later (in 11.4 seconds), but manufacturer's fuel consumption is lower by 0.2 litres per 100 km or 4 % - 5.1 litres per 100 km, whereas users reported real fuel consumption is higher by 0.9 litres per 100 km or 14 % - 7.5 litres per 100 km

Engine reliability and common problems:

This 1.6-liter diesel engine is a joint development by Renault-Nissan engineers. It features a cast-iron block, a 16-valve cylinder head with hydraulic lifters, a chain-driven timing system, and a Bosch Common Rail fuel injection system.

The engine is praised for its impressive power output for its size, relatively low fuel consumption, and long service life when properly maintained.

However, it has several notable weaknesses. The timing chain tends to stretch as early as 140,000–150,000 km, despite the system being theoretically designed for 250,000 km. If the chain skips a tooth on the sprocket, it almost always results in bent valves and a costly engine repair.

Another widespread issue is the rapid clogging of the EGR system—this engine is equipped with two EGR valves—which, along with the DPF filter, requires frequent servicing. The engine is also known for oil leaks, commonly occurring around the valve cover, timing chain area, and oil filter housing seals.

Owners frequently report exhaust fumes entering the cabin, often due to failure of the EGR system heat exchanger, which stops effectively routing gases and allows them to leak.

Additionally, a large-scale recall was conducted between 2015 and 2017 to replace a fragile exhaust gas recirculation pipe that was prone to cracking under temperature fluctuations. This issue primarily affected Twin-Turbo versions of the engine.
Overall, this engine can last around 220,000 to 370,000 km if properly maintained, using the correct quality oil and fuel, and carrying out regular checks and maintenance.
The engine has hydraulic valve tappets (lifters), which provide quieter operation and do not require periodic adjustment, but are more complex in design and can cause serious engine damage in the event of failure.

Camshaft drive Timing chain

Chain motors are considered more reliable, chain replacement usually is required less often than a timing belt, but they are often louder and vibrate more.

Timing chain change interval 200,000 km (recommended)

Sometimes manufacturers do not specify timing chain replacement intervals and design chains for engine life. However, once the recommended change interval has been reached, it is recommended to periodically check the condition of the chain and to change the chain if excessive stretching is detected or if unusual noises from the engine or other symptoms occur.

Fuel system Common Rail

Common rail fuel injection provides more engine power, is quieter, more environmentally friendly and offers better fuel economy, but is more expensive to maintain and repair.
