Honda CR-V 2010 2.2 i-DTEC (gen 3)

Honda CR-V 2010 2.2 diesel description

Honda CR-V 2010 2.2 i-DTEC has been produced from 2010 to 2012. It has four-cylinder diesel engine with displacement of 2.2 litres, which produces power of 150 horsepower at 4000 rpm and torque 350 Nm (Newton metres).

This 4-cylinder 16-valve engine camshaft is driven by chain (What is an engine chain and belt? ). Engine has Common Rail fuel system and Garrett GTB1449VLZ turbine. The engine meets the Euro 5 emissions standard. Approximate engine life expectancy (mileage until serious repairs are required) for this engine is between 210 000 and 360 000 kilometres. Note that engine life can be longer or shorter depending on maintenance.

The Honda N22B diesel is generally considered a successful and durable engine. Its main weak points are connected with the fuel system, emissions components, cold-weather operation, and several intake and exhaust-related parts. One of the most frequent complaints concerns the injectors. Depending on the version, owners report  ...  This Honda CR-V 2.2 engine oil type is 0W-30 and oil capacity is 5.5 litres.

Honda CR-V 2010 2.2 i-DTEC has AWD (all wheel drive) (power is automatically distributed between the wheel axles) and manual gearbox with 6 gears. Car features Honda`s real-time four-wheel-drive system, which sends torque to the front wheels under normal conditions. A multi-plate clutch transfers torque to the rear axle when wheel slip is identified (pressure is provided to the clutch by a dual-pump system). To allow ABS to work seamlessly, the clutch is also disengaged during braking.
Honda CR-V 2010 2.2 i-DTEC accelerates to speed 100 kilometres per hour in 9.6 seconds. The maximum speed of this car is 190 km/h.

In combined cycle (city and motorway), the Honda CR-V 2010 2.2 i-DTEC fuel consumption is 6.5 litres per 100km (15.4 km/l) - this is the most fuel efficient Honda CR-V 2010 - 2012 version, city fuel economy - 8 l/100km, fuel consumption on highway - 5.6 l/100km. Fuel tank capacity is 58 litres or 15.32 gallons, which gives a mileage up to 880 kilometers without refueling in urban cycle and even up to 1020 kilometers on highway.

With the same engine there is also Honda CR-V version with automatic gearbox (Honda CR-V 2010 2.2 i-CTDi AT 4x4) available, which is more sluggish, reaching 100 km/h 1 seconds later (in 10.6 seconds), but manufacturer's fuel consumption is higher by 0.9 litres per 100 km or 14 % - 7.4 litres per 100 km.

Honda CR-V 2010 2.2 i-DTEC engine N22B

Engine reliability and common problems:

The Honda N22B diesel is generally considered a successful and durable engine. Its main weak points are connected with the fuel system, emissions components, cold-weather operation, and several intake and exhaust-related parts.

One of the most frequent complaints concerns the injectors. Depending on the version, owners report problems with sensitive piezo injectors, while Bosch injectors themselves are usually considered durable. However, the copper sealing washers under the injectors need attention, as they can burn through and allow combustion gases to leak into the injector wells. The fuel filter is also important: it should be changed regularly, ideally even every 10,000 km or before winter, because a clogged filter can damage the lift pump and make starting difficult.

Cold-weather operation is one of this engine’s weaker areas. In temperatures below roughly -15°C, poor winter diesel or a partially restricted fuel filter can make starting very difficult, as the filter heater may not cope. For this reason, winter fuel quality and fuel filter condition are especially important.

The engine also has several typical intake and emissions-related issues. The EGR valve and diesel particulate filter can cause problems as they clog with soot, while the EGR pipe itself may crack. The intake manifold uses an IMRC flap, which can stick because of carbon buildup. The solenoid controlling it may also fail or become contaminated, leading to power dips, jerking under acceleration, and errors such as P2004. A dirty MAP sensor near the EGR valve can also make the engine feel sluggish and reduce maximum power, with related fault codes such as P1069 or P0069.

Another known issue is cracking of the exhaust manifold, usually closer to 150,000–200,000 km. This was a recognized defect, and Honda extended warranty coverage for the part in some cases. Early turbochargers were not always especially long-lived either, with shaft play and oil leakage into the intake or exhaust reported on some engines.

The timing chain can stretch on early units, usually showing itself through abnormal engine noise. However, chain jumping or complete failure is not considered common. The engine is also sensitive to oil specification: using the correct 0W-30 oil is important, as unsuitable oil can contribute to timing chain tensioning problems. The dual-mass flywheel is another relatively expensive wear item and does not always last as long as expected.

Overall, the N22B is a strong diesel when serviced correctly, but it needs proper oil, frequent fuel filter replacement, good winter diesel, and regular attention to the EGR, intake, MAP sensor, and exhaust manifold. With these points under control, it can be a reliable engine, but neglected maintenance can quickly lead to difficult and expensive faults.
Overall, this engine can last around 210,000 to 360,000 km if properly maintained, using the correct quality oil and fuel, and carrying out regular checks and maintenance.
Engine displacement 2199 cm3
Number of cylinders 4
Bore (cylinder diameter) 85 mm
Stroke length (piston move) 96.9 mm
Compression ratio 16.3 : 1
Camshaft drive Timing chain

Chain motors are considered more reliable, chain replacement usually is required less often than a timing belt, but they are often louder and vibrate more.

Fuel system Common Rail

Common rail fuel injection provides more engine power, is quieter, more environmentally friendly and offers better fuel economy, but is more expensive to maintain and repair.
