Engine reliability and common problems:
Toyota introduced this 1.4-liter turbocharged diesel engine in 2001, and production continued until 2017. It features a Bosch Common Rail fuel injection system, initially equipped with electromagnetic injectors until 2008. These were later replaced by non-repairable piezoelectric injectors, along with the addition of a diesel particulate filter. However, between 2012 and 2016, Bosch electromagnetic injectors were reintroduced. Engine is known for its reliability and durability. While early versions were subject to recall campaigns due to turbocharger failures or head gasket issues, the engine generally stands out for its longevity. Some cases of low compression, piston damage, or even camshaft breakage have been reported, but these are usually linked to poor maintenance. The timing system includes a durable chain, but even it can stretch over time, usually beyond 250,000 km. Detecting chain elongation is difficult, with the primary symptom being difficult engine startup.
One of the most common issues with this engine is oil consumption, often caused not by worn piston rings or valve seals but by turbocharger failure. The crankcase ventilation system is another weak point, as it clogs quickly, leading to excessive oil entering the intake and causing leaks from the engine seals.
Glow plugs have a limited lifespan and will inevitably need replacement. However, removing them without breaking requires experience. Aside from the sensitive piezo injectors, the fuel system is relatively reliable, with the pressure regulator valve in the fuel rail being the most common failure point.
The cylinder head does not feature hydraulic lifters, meaning valve clearance adjustments are required every 100,000 km. In practice, however, the engine often runs much longer without needing adjustment.
Overall, this engine can last around 190,000 to 330,000 km if properly maintained, using the correct quality oil and fuel, and carrying out regular checks and maintenance.

Camshaft drive | Timing chain Chain motors are considered more reliable, chain replacement usually is required less often than a timing belt, but they are often louder and vibrate more. More service info |
Timing chain change interval | 250,000 km (recommended) Sometimes manufacturers do not specify timing chain replacement intervals and design chains for engine life. However, once the recommended change interval has been reached, it is recommended to periodically check the condition of the chain and to change the chain if excessive stretching is detected or if unusual noises from the engine or other symptoms occur. |
Fuel system | Common Rail Common rail fuel injection provides more engine power, is quieter, more environmentally friendly and offers better fuel economy, but is more expensive to maintain and repair. |
