Honda Stream 2001 2.0 i 4WD

Honda Stream 2001 2.0 petrol description

Minivan / MPV Honda Stream 2001 2.0 i 4WD has been produced from January, 2001 to December, 2007. It has four-cylinder petrol engine with displacement of 2.0 litres, which produces power of 158 horsepower on 6500 rpm - this is the most powerfull Honda Stream 2001 - 2007 version and torque 190 Nm (Newton metres) on 4000 revolutions per minute.

This 4-cylinder 16-valve engine camshaft is driven by chain (What is an engine chain and belt? ). Engine has fuel injection system without turbocharger. Engine versions compliant with Euro 3 and Euro 4 emission standards available. Average engine life expectancy (mileage before serious repairs are needed) is from 270 000 to 450 000 kilometres. Remember that engine life depends on regular maintenance and the quality of the materials used (oils, fuels, etc.).

Engine reliability and common problems:

In 2001, Honda introduced the K-series engine lineup, featuring an aluminum block with an open-deck design and cast-iron cylinder liners. It utilizes a port fuel injection system, a 16-valve aluminum cylinder head without hydraulic lifters, individual ignition coils, a VTC cam phaser on the intake, and a timing chain. Standard versions were equipped with a plastic intake manifold with variable geometry and VTEC on the intake side, while performance variants featured an aluminum manifold and VTEC on both camshafts.

One of the known weaknesses of this engine family is the premature wear of the exhaust camshaft lobes, primarily affecting non-performance models without VTEC on the exhaust side. To prevent excessive wear, it is crucial to use the recommended oil viscosity and check valve clearances every 40,000 km.

The engine is highly sensitive to maintenance intervals, as dirty oil clogs the fine-mesh filters inside the VTC cam phaser and i-VTEC control valve. By 200,000 km, phase misalignment may occur due to chain elongation or wear in the VTC system.

Oil consumption is another issue. Like many aluminum engines with an open-deck design, it is prone to overheating, and its thin piston rings often become stuck. Low oil levels can lead to spun bearings, making frequent oil checks essential.

The timing chain on the K20A engine is known to stretch, especially around 200,000 km. While a stretched chain does not always produce noise, it can be diagnosed by checking the hydraulic tensioner plunger. Another method is to compare the alignment of timing marks on the cam gears and crankshaft pulley.

Other common complaints include jamming of the variable-length intake manifold system, oil leaks from the front crankshaft seal and i-VTEC control valve, and unstable idle caused by a dirty throttle body or idle air control valve.
Overall, this engine can last around 270,000 to 450,000 km if properly maintained, using the correct quality oil and fuel, and carrying out regular checks and maintenance.

Chain motors are considered more reliable, chain replacement usually is required less often than a timing belt, but they are often louder and vibrate more.

Timing chain change interval 200,000 km (recommended)

Sometimes manufacturers do not specify timing chain replacement intervals and design chains for engine life. However, once the recommended change interval has been reached, it is recommended to periodically check the condition of the chain and to change the chain if excessive stretching is detected or if unusual noises from the engine or other symptoms occur.

Generally, the use of an engine in several models and its long production run is an indication of the quality of the engine and the success of its design.
