BMW 120d (F20)

BMW 1 series 2011 2.0 diesel description

Hatchback BMW 120d has been produced from January, 2011 to January, 2015. It has four-cylinder diesel engine with displacement of 2.0 litres, which produces power of 184 horsepower on 4000 rpm and torque 380 Nm (Newton metres) on 1750 revolutions per minute.

This 4-cylinder 16-valve engine camshaft is driven by chain (What is an engine chain and belt? ). Engine has Common Rail fuel system and turbine. Engine versions compliant with Euro 5 and Euro 6 emission standards available. Engine lifespan (mileage before major repairs or overhaul) can last from 210 up to 360 thousand kilometres. Remember that engine life depends on regular maintenance and the quality of the materials used (oils, fuels, etc.).
More engine specs
Because of problems with the timing chain, which tends to stretch at 100,000 km, the BMW N47  ...  This BMW 1 series 2.0 engine oil type is 5W-30 and oil capacity is 5.2 litres.

BMW 120d has classical rear wheel drive (RWD) and automatic gearbox with 8 gears.
BMW 120d accelerates to speed 100 kilometres per hour in 7.3 seconds. The maximum speed of this car is 228 km/h.

BMW 120d fuel consumption is 4.4 litres per 100km in combined city/highway mode (22.7 km/l), fuel consumption in city - 5.2 l/100km, highway fuel economy - 3.9 l/100km. Fuel tank capacity is 52 litres or 13.74 gallons, which gives a mileage up to 1180 kilometers without refueling in urban cycle and even up to 1320 kilometers on highway.
According to user reviews, this BMW real everyday fuel consumption is 6 litres per 100 km, which is 36% more than the manufacturer's stated. More - Real BMW 1 series fuel consumption.

BMW 1 series safety

During safety testing BMW 1 series has obtained 5 stars from five, which means very high safety level.
Adults (driver and passenger) safety of BMW 1 series is evaluated with outstanding rate 91 from 100, children safety: very good mark - 83 from 100, for pedestrian protection BMW 1 series got 63 points from 100.
BMW 1 series safety equipment has been rated as very good - 86 percents from 100.

With the same engine there are also two other BMW 1 series versions - with manual gearbox (BMW 120d MT), and with four wheel (4x4) drive and manual gearbox (BMW 120d MT 4x4) available:
  • BMW 120d MT users reported real fuel consumption is lower by 0.2 litres per 100 km or 3 % - 5.8 litres per 100 km
  • BMW 120d MT 4x4 users reported real fuel consumption is lower by 0.2 litres per 100 km or 3 % - 5.8 litres per 100 km

Engine reliability and common problems:

Because of problems with the timing chain, which tends to stretch at 100,000 km, the BMW N47 engine is sometimes called the worst BMW engine. Replacing the timing chain also requires removing the engine from the car. For engines produced after 2015, the cause of the timing chain problem has reportedly been eliminated. Also, the crankshaft damper on this engine does not tend to last very long. Cracking between the cylinders tends to occur due to the engine overheating.
Overall, this engine can last around 210,000 to 360,000 km if properly maintained, using the correct quality oil and fuel, and carrying out regular checks and maintenance.
The engine has hydraulic valve tappets (lifters), which provide quieter operation and do not require periodic adjustment, but are more complex in design and can cause serious engine damage in the event of failure.
Engine displacement 1995 cm3
Number of cylinders 4
Bore (cylinder diameter) 84 mm
Stroke length (piston move) 90 mm
Compression ratio 16.5 : 1
Camshaft drive Timing chain

Chain motors are considered more reliable, chain replacement usually is required less often than a timing belt, but they are often louder and vibrate more.

Timing chain change interval 100,000 km (recommended)

Sometimes manufacturers do not specify timing chain replacement intervals and design chains for engine life. However, once the recommended change interval has been reached, it is recommended to periodically check the condition of the chain and to change the chain if excessive stretching is detected or if unusual noises from the engine or other symptoms occur.

Fuel system Common Rail

Common rail fuel injection provides more engine power, is quieter, more environmentally friendly and offers better fuel economy, but is more expensive to maintain and repair.
