BMW 125d (F20)
BMW 1 series 2011 2.0 diesel description
Hatchback BMW 125d has been produced from January, 2012 to December, 2015. It has four-cylinder diesel engine with displacement of 2.0 litres, which produces power of 218 horsepower on 4400 rpm and torque 450 Nm (Newton metres) on 1500 revolutions per minute.
This 4-cylinder 16-valve engine camshaft is driven by chain (What is an engine chain and belt? ). Engine has Common Rail fuel system and TwinTurbo turbine. Engine versions compliant with Euro 5 and Euro 6 emission standards available. Average engine life expectancy (mileage before serious repairs are needed) is from 180 000 to 300 000 kilometres. Note that engine life can be longer or shorter depending on maintenance.

BMW 125d engine N47S1
Engine reliability and common problems:
Because of problems with the timing chain, which tends to stretch at 100,000 km, the BMW N47 engine is sometimes called the worst BMW engine. In addition, the engine has to be removed from the car in order to replace the timing chain. The cause of the timing chain problem is said to have been eliminated for engines produced after 2015. Also, the crankshaft damper on this engine does not tend to last very long. Cracks tend to form between the cylinders as the engine overheats.Overall, this engine can last around 180,000 to 300,000 km if properly maintained, using the correct quality oil and fuel, and carrying out regular checks and maintenance.
The engine has hydraulic valve tappets (lifters), which provide quieter operation and do not require periodic adjustment, but are more complex in design and can cause serious engine damage in the event of failure.
