Engine reliability and common problems:
The AD-series turbo diesel engines were introduced in Toyota vehicles in 2005 and remained in production until 2018. The first model was a 2.2-liter engine, followed by a 2.0-liter version. Both engines share an 86 mm cylinder bore but differ in stroke length. The 2.2-liter variant includes balance shafts driven by a gear mechanism connected to the crankshaft. These engines feature a timing chain system and an IHI variable geometry turbocharger with a vacuum actuator. In the higher-performance 2AD-FHV (177 hp) version, the turbocharger is liquid-cooled. The fuel injection system is based on a Denso Common Rail system with an HP3 high-pressure fuel pump. Over the years, the engine underwent several upgrades, with the most significant being the switch from electromagnetic to piezo injectors in 2009 to meet Euro 5 emission standards.
The engine is known for its fuel efficiency and strong low-end torque. The timing chain system is generally reliable.
However, it has some drawbacks. Head gasket failures are common, and oil consumption issues may arise even at low mileage. The EGR valve clogs quickly and often requires cleaning even every 30,000 km. When the EGR valve sticks, performance drops noticeably, especially at highway speeds, where the vehicle struggles to accelerate.
Additionally, the diesel particulate filter has a relatively short lifespan. On average, fuel injectors last around 250,000 km before requiring replacement.
The engine has hydraulic valve tappets (lifters), which provide quieter operation and do not require periodic adjustment, but are more complex in design and can cause serious engine damage in the event of failure.

Camshaft drive | Timing chain Chain motors are considered more reliable, chain replacement usually is required less often than a timing belt, but they are often louder and vibrate more. More service info |
Timing chain change interval | 250,000 km (recommended) Sometimes manufacturers do not specify timing chain replacement intervals and design chains for engine life. However, once the recommended change interval has been reached, it is recommended to periodically check the condition of the chain and to change the chain if excessive stretching is detected or if unusual noises from the engine or other symptoms occur. |
Fuel system | Common Rail Common rail fuel injection provides more engine power, is quieter, more environmentally friendly and offers better fuel economy, but is more expensive to maintain and repair. |
