Engine reliability and common problems:
The early versions of these engines are known for their reliability and rare failures, which made them popular. However, engine have several common weaknesses. Intake manifold swirl flaps often seize, and the plastic gears in the turbo actuator drive wear out quickly. Hydraulic lifters suffer from poor-quality oils and can start making noise as early as 100,000 km. If the alternator belt snaps, it can get caught in the timing belt, leading to catastrophic engine failure. At higher mileages, cylinder liners may crack, causing coolant to mix with oil.
A less successful engine modernization occurred in 2007 when three belts were introduced for auxiliary equipment. Two of these belts proved problematic, often causing premature roller bearing wear. This led to misalignment and, in some cases, the roller being pulled under the timing belt cover, between the timing belt and the pulley. This resulted in the timing belt jumping and pistons colliding with valves. This issue affected engines produced from 2007 to spring 2010.
Overall, this engine can last around 310,000 to 520,000 km if properly maintained, using the correct quality oil and fuel, and carrying out regular checks and maintenance.
The engine has hydraulic valve tappets (lifters), which provide quieter operation and do not require periodic adjustment, but are more complex in design and can cause serious engine damage in the event of failure.
