BMW 318d (Touring F31)

BMW 3 series 2012 2.0 diesel description

Estate car / wagon BMW 318d has been produced from January, 2012 to December, 2015. It has four-cylinder diesel engine with displacement of 2.0 litres, which produces power of 143 horsepower on 4000 rpm and torque 320 Nm (Newton metres) on 1750 revolutions per minute.

This 4-cylinder 16-valve engine camshaft is driven by chain (What is an engine chain and belt? ). Engine has Common Rail fuel system and turbine. The engine meets the Euro 5 emissions standard. Approximate engine life expectancy (mileage until serious repairs are required) for this engine is between 220 000 and 370 000 kilometres. Note that engine life can be longer or shorter depending on maintenance.

The BMW N47 engine is sometimes called the worst BMW engine because of problems with the timing  ...  This BMW 3 series 2.0 engine oil type is 5W-30 and oil capacity is 5.2 litres.

BMW 318d has classical rear wheel drive (RWD) and automatic gearbox with 8 gears.
BMW 318d accelerates to speed 100 kilometres per hour in 9.2 seconds. The maximum speed of this car is 210 km/h.

The fuel consumption of this version of BMW 318d reported by owners in daily driving mode is 6.2 litres per 100km.

BMW 3 series safety

During safety testing BMW 3 series has obtained 5 stars from five, which means very high safety level.
Adults (driver and passenger) safety of BMW 3 series is evaluated with outstanding rate 95 from 100, children safety: very good mark - 84 from 100, for pedestrian protection BMW 3 series got 78 points from 100.
BMW 3 series safety equipment has been rated as very good - 86 percents from 100.

With the same engine there are also two other BMW 3 series versions - with manual gearbox (BMW 318d MT), and with four wheel (4x4) drive and manual gearbox (BMW 318d MT 4x4) available:
  • BMW 318d MT users reported real fuel consumption is lower by 0.6 litres per 100 km or 10 % - 5.6 litres per 100 km
  • BMW 318d MT 4x4 is more sluggish, reaching 100 km/h 0.4 seconds later (in 9.6 seconds), but more economic with users reported real fuel consumption is lower by 0.2 litres per 100 km or 3 % - 6.0 litres per 100 km

Engine reliability and common problems:

The BMW N47 engine is sometimes called the worst BMW engine because of problems with the timing chain, which tends to stretch at 100 000 km. In addition, the engine has to be removed from the car to replace the timing chain. The cause of the timing chain problem was reportedly eliminated for engines produced after 2015. Also, the crankshaft damper on this engine tends not to last very long. Cracks between the cylinders tend to appear due to overheating of the engine.
Overall, this engine can last around 220,000 to 370,000 km if properly maintained, using the correct quality oil and fuel, and carrying out regular checks and maintenance.
The engine has hydraulic valve tappets (lifters), which provide quieter operation and do not require periodic adjustment, but are more complex in design and can cause serious engine damage in the event of failure.
Engine displacement 1995 cm3
Number of cylinders 4
Bore (cylinder diameter) 84 mm
Stroke length (piston move) 90 mm
Compression ratio 16 : 1
Camshaft drive Timing chain

Chain motors are considered more reliable, chain replacement usually is required less often than a timing belt, but they are often louder and vibrate more.

Timing chain change interval 100,000 km (recommended)

Sometimes manufacturers do not specify timing chain replacement intervals and design chains for engine life. However, once the recommended change interval has been reached, it is recommended to periodically check the condition of the chain and to change the chain if excessive stretching is detected or if unusual noises from the engine or other symptoms occur.

Fuel system Common Rail

Common rail fuel injection provides more engine power, is quieter, more environmentally friendly and offers better fuel economy, but is more expensive to maintain and repair.
