Nissan Almera 2000 - 2007 (N16) Automatic Gearbox modes
What Do the O/D, MANU, and PWR Buttons on the Automatic Gear Lever Mean?
O/D (Overdrive):
This button controls the use of 4th gear in a 4-speed automatic transmission.
-
O/D ON (button not pressed, no “O/D OFF” light): All gears are available, including 4th. Best used on highways and at steady speeds over 70 km/h to reduce fuel consumption and engine RPM.
-
O/D OFF (button pressed, “O/D OFF” light is on): Limits the car to 1st–3rd gear. Recommended in city traffic, on slippery roads, steep descents, or when engine braking is needed. Also helps reduce wear if the transmission frequently shifts between 3rd and 4th.
MANU (Manual/Snow Mode):
Designed for winter driving or slippery surfaces.
-
The car starts in 2nd gear to reduce wheel spin.
-
Gear shifts happen at lower RPMs for smoother and more controlled driving.
-
Automatic upshifts are limited or locked; the car uses more engine braking and feels less responsive ("sluggish").
-
Fuel consumption may drop.
-
Often labeled as SNOW or HOLD in other car brands.
Not recommended for summer driving, dry roads, or overtaking. Activating MANU disables the PWR mode.
PWR (Power Mode):
This is the opposite of MANU mode and is intended for dynamic driving.
-
The transmission shifts at higher RPMs, delivering maximum power and acceleration.
-
Ideal for overtaking or sporty driving.
-
Increases fuel consumption.
Also known as SHIFT or POWER depending on the vehicle brand.
