Mitsubishi Carisma is a compact family car produced between 1995 and 2004. It was developed in cooperation with Volvo and built in the Netherlands at the NedCar plant, sharing its platform with the Volvo S40 and V40 of the same era. The model was positioned as a practical and understated alternative in the European C-segment. Total production reached approximately 350,000 units.

The Carisma was available as a four-door sedan and a five-door hatchback. Engine options included 1.3-, 1.6-, and 1.8-liter petrol units, with power outputs ranging from about 82 to 125 horsepower. A notable version was the 1.8 GDI engine, one of the early gasoline direct-injection engines in its class, designed to improve fuel efficiency and emissions. Diesel variants, including 1.9-liter turbo diesel engines sourced from Renault, were also offered, focusing on economy and torque for everyday driving.

In 1999, the model received a facelift with updated styling, improved interior materials, and revised suspension tuning for better ride comfort and stability. Safety equipment included ABS, airbags, and optional traction control, aligning it with segment standards of the time. The chassis setup prioritized balanced handling and predictable road behavior rather than sporty dynamics.

In user reviews, the Mitsubishi Carisma is often portrayed as a quiet achiever rather than a standout performer. Owners frequently describe it as dependable transport that rarely demands attention beyond routine maintenance. The GDI engines are appreciated for their fuel economy when properly maintained, while diesel versions are valued for long-distance efficiency. However, some drivers mention that the design lacks character, interior plastics feel dated, and certain GDI engines can be sensitive to fuel quality and maintenance neglect. Overall, it is remembered as a solid and sensible family car rather than an emotional purchase.
