Gearbox: | Manual | Manual | |
---|---|---|---|
Engine: | 1.7 Diesel | 2.0 Diesel | |
Camshaft drive: | Timing belt | Timing chain | |
Timing belt usually needs to be replaced more often than the chain, but it is usually significantly cheaper. Timing belt motors are generally quieter and less vibrating than chain motors. | |||
Performance | |||
Power: | 125 HP | 184 HP | |
Torque: | 280 NM | 380 NM | |
Acceleration 0-100 km/h: | 10.7 seconds | 8.2 seconds | |
BMW 3 series is a more dynamic driving. Opel Astra engine produces 59 HP less power than BMW 3 series, whereas torque is 100 NM less than BMW 3 series. Due to the lower power, Opel Astra reaches 100 km/h speed 2.5 seconds later. | |||
Fuel consumption | |||
Fuel consumption (l/100km): | 5.5 | 5.3 | |
Real fuel consumption: | 6.2 l/100km | 6.1 l/100km | |
By specification Opel Astra consumes 0.2 litres more fuel per 100 km than the BMW 3 series, which means that if you drive 15,000 km in a year, the Opel Astra could require 30 litres more fuel. By comparing actual fuel consumption based on user reports, Opel Astra consumes 0.1 litres more fuel per 100 km than the BMW 3 series. | |||
Fuel tank capacity: | 52 litres | 61 litres | |
Full fuel tank distance: | 940 km in combined cycle | 1150 km in combined cycle | |
1100 km on highway | 1320 km on highway | ||
830 km with real consumption | 1000 km with real consumption | ||
BMW 3 series gets more mileage on one fuel tank. | |||
Drive type | |||
Wheel drive type: | Front wheel drive (FWD) | 4x4 - AWD (all-wheel-drive) | |
BMW 3 sērija 2008: BMW xDrive is a proactive all-wheel drive system without a center differential that engages before the vehicle becomes destabilized, unnoticed by the driver. Torque is distributed between the axles by an electronically controlled multi-plate clutch in the transfer case. The clutch is partially locked most of the time, distributing power to both axles in a 40/60 front/rear ratio, but the system is capable of sending 100% of the torque to either axle. At high speeds or when parking, for example, the clutch is disengaged and all power is sent to the rear wheels. DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) also brakes the wheels individually to regain traction and assist in cornering. | |||
Ground clearance: | 160 mm (6.3 inches) | 140 mm (5.5 inches) | |
Because of the higher ground clearance, Opel Astra can perform better on bad roads - it can go over higher obstacles and bumps. At the same time, the higher ground clearance can reduce stability and handling on paved roads, especially at higher speeds. Note, however, that this Opel Astra version does not have 4x4 drive, which is very important in poor road conditions. | |||
Engines | |||
Average engine lifespan: | 470'000 km | 330'000 km | |
Engine resource depends largely on regular maintenance and the quality of the oils and fuels used, but under equal conditions the average life of a Opel Astra engine could be longer. | |||
Engine production duration: | 3 years | 18 years | |
Engine spread: | Installed on at least 3 other car models, including Opel Zafira, Opel Meriva, Opel Corsa | Installed on at least 6 other car models, including BMW 5 sērija, BMW 1 sērija, BMW X3, BMW X1 | |
In general, the longer and for more car models an engine is produced, the better its serviceability and availability of spare parts. BMW 3 series might be a better choice in this respect. | |||
Hydraulic tappets: | no | yes | |
The BMW 3 series engine has hydraulic tappets (lifters), providing quieter operation and no need for periodic adjustment, but they are more complex in design and can cause serious engine damage in case of failure. | |||
BMW 3 sērija 2010 2.0 engine: Because of problems with the timing chain, which tends to stretch at 100,000 km, the BMW N47 engine is sometimes called the worst BMW engine. Replacing the timing chain also requires removing the engine from ... More about BMW 3 sērija 2010 2.0 engine | |||

The turning circle of the Opel Astra is 0.8 metres less than that of the BMW 3 series, which means Opel Astra can be easier to manoeuvre in tight streets and parking spaces. | |||
Power steering: | Hydraulic power steering | Electric power steering | |
Hydraulic power steering is technologically more complex, louder, increases fuel consumption and requires more servicing. It has the advantages of more power, less strain on the car's electrical system and better feedback (feeling) when steering. | |||
