Torque: | 400 NM | 270 NM | |
Acceleration 0-100 km/h: | 5.5 seconds | 6.4 seconds
BMW 3 series is more dynamic to drive. BMW 3 series engine produces 88 HP more power than BMW 1 series, whereas torque is 130 NM more than BMW 1 series. Thanks to more power BMW 3 series reaches 100 km/h speed 0.9 seconds faster.
Fuel consumption | |||
Fuel consumption (l/100km): | 8.4 | 8.1
Real fuel consumption: | 10.5 l/100km | 9.3 l/100km
The BMW 1 series is a better choice when it comes to fuel economy. By specification BMW 3 series consumes 0.3 litres more fuel per 100 km than the BMW 1 series, which means that if you drive 15,000 km in a year, the BMW 3 series could require 45 litres more fuel. By comparing actual fuel consumption based on user reports, BMW 3 series consumes 1.2 litres more fuel per 100 km than the BMW 1 series.

Drive type | |||
Wheel drive type: | 4x4 - AWD (all-wheel-drive) | Rear wheel drive (RWD)
BMW 3 sērija has 4x4: BMW xDrive is a proactive all-wheel drive system without a center differential that engages before the vehicle becomes destabilized, unnoticed by the driver. Torque is distributed between the axles by an electronically controlled multi-plate clutch in the transfer case. The clutch is partially locked most of the time, distributing power to both axles in a 40/60 front/rear ratio, but the system is capable of sending 100% of the torque to either axle. At higher speeds or when parking, multi-plate clutch is disengaged and all power is transferred to the rear wheels. DSC system (Dynamic Stability Control) also brakes the wheels separately to regain traction and assist in cornering.
Ground clearance: | 125 mm (4.9 inches) | 147 mm (5.8 inches)
Because of the higher ground clearance, BMW 1 series can perform better on bad roads - it can go over higher obstacles and bumps. At the same time, the higher ground clearance can reduce stability and handling on paved roads, especially at higher speeds. Note, however, that this BMW 1 series version does not have 4x4 drive, which is very important in poor road conditions.
Engines | |||
Average engine lifespan: | 420'000 km | 380'000 km
Engine resource depends largely on regular maintenance and the quality of the oils and fuels used.
Engine production duration: | 9 years | 7 years
Engine spread: | Installed on at least 7 other car models, including BMW 5 sērija, BMW X5, BMW 1 sērija, BMW X3, BMW X6 | Installed on at least 8 other car models, including BMW 5 sērija, BMW 3 sērija, BMW X5, BMW 7 sērija
In general, the longer and for more car models an engine is produced, the better its serviceability and availability of spare parts. BMW 1 series might be a better choice in this respect.
BMW 3 sērija 2010 3.0 engine: Using poor quality oil on this engine will quickly lead to soot build-up, resulting in damage to the hydrocompensators, Vanos and Valvetronic systems. BMW 1 sērija 2011 3.0 engine: The BMW N52 engine was the first water-cooled engine to feature a composite cylinder block made from a magnesium and aluminum alloy. It was included in Ward’s AutoWorld’s list of the top 10 engines in 2006 and 2007. While it offers many advantages, the ... More about BMW 1 sērija 2011 3.0 engine
