BMW 3 series 2015 vs Toyota Corolla 2013
Gearbox: | Automatic | Automatic | |
---|---|---|---|
Engine: | 2.0 Diesel | 1.6 Petrol | |
Diesel (BMW 3 series) engines typically outperform gasoline engines in terms of fuel efficiency and low-end torque. This makes them more economical and better suited for towing or long-distance travel. However, gasoline (Toyota Corolla) engines mostly are lighter, quieter, and offer better acceleration and responsiveness, especially in smaller vehicles. For more information, see the article "Diesel or Petrol: Fuel Economy and Key Differences." | |||

Power: | 190 HP | 122 HP | |
Torque: | 400 NM | 157 NM | |
Acceleration 0-100 km/h: | 7.3 seconds | 11.1 seconds | |
BMW 3 series is more dynamic to drive. BMW 3 series engine produces 68 HP more power than Toyota Corolla, whereas torque is 243 NM more than Toyota Corolla. Thanks to more power BMW 3 series reaches 100 km/h speed 3.8 seconds faster. | |||
Fuel consumption | |||
Fuel consumption (l/100km): | 4.7 | 6.3 | |
The BMW 3 series is a better choice when it comes to fuel economy. BMW 3 series consumes 1.6 litres less fuel per 100 km than the Toyota Corolla, which means that by driving the BMW 3 series over 15,000 km in a year you can save 240 litres of fuel. | |||
Fuel tank capacity: | 57 litres | 55 litres | |
Full fuel tank distance: | 1210 km in combined cycle | 870 km in combined cycle | |
1350 km on highway | 1030 km on highway | ||

Drive type | |||
Wheel drive type: | 4x4 - AWD (all-wheel-drive) | Front wheel drive (FWD) | |
BMW 3 sērija has 4x4: BMW xDrive is a proactive all-wheel drive system without a center differential that engages before the vehicle becomes destabilized, unnoticed by the driver. Torque is distributed between the axles by an electronically controlled multi-plate clutch in the transfer case. The clutch is partially locked at most times, distributing power to both axles in a 40/60 front/rear ratio, but the system is capable of sending 100% of the torque to either axle. At higher speeds or when parking, multi-plate clutch is disengaged and all power is transferred to the rear wheels. DSC system (Dynamic Stability Control) also brakes the wheels separately to regain traction and assist in cornering. | |||
Ground clearance: | 145 mm (5.7 inches) | 125 mm (4.9 inches) | |
Because of the higher ground clearance, BMW 3 series can perform better on bad roads - it can go over higher obstacles and bumps. At the same time, the higher ground clearance can reduce stability and handling on paved roads, especially at higher speeds. | |||
Engines | |||
Average engine lifespan: | 330'000 km | 280'000 km | |
Engine resource depends largely on regular maintenance and the quality of the oils and fuels used, but under equal conditions the average life of a BMW 3 series engine could be longer. | |||
Engine production duration: | 11 years | 19 years | |
Engine spread: | Installed on at least 6 other car models, including BMW 5 sērija, BMW 1 sērija, BMW X3, BMW 2 sērija | Used also on Toyota Auris | |
In general, the longer and for more car models an engine is produced, the better its serviceability and availability of spare parts. | |||
