BMW 3 series 2008 vs Opel Astra 2007
Gearbox: | Manual | Manual | |
---|---|---|---|
Engine: | 2.0 Diesel | 1.9 Diesel | |
Camshaft drive: | Timing chain | Timing belt | |
Engine chain usually needs to be replaced less often than the timing belt, but the cost of replacing the chain is usually higher. Chain motors are considered to be more reliable, but noisier and more vibration generating. | |||
Performance | |||
Power: | 177 HP | 120 HP | |
Torque: | 350 NM | 280 NM | |
Acceleration 0-100 km/h: | 8.5 seconds | 11 seconds | |
BMW 3 series is more dynamic to drive. BMW 3 series engine produces 57 HP more power than Opel Astra, whereas torque is 70 NM more than Opel Astra. Thanks to more power BMW 3 series reaches 100 km/h speed 2.5 seconds faster. | |||
Fuel consumption | |||
Fuel consumption (l/100km): | 5.6 | 5.9 | |
Real fuel consumption: | 6.0 l/100km | 6.0 l/100km | |
The BMW 3 series is a better choice when it comes to fuel economy. By specification BMW 3 series consumes 0.3 litres less fuel per 100 km than the Opel Astra, which means that by driving the BMW 3 series over 15,000 km in a year you can save 45 litres of fuel. | |||
Fuel tank capacity: | 61 litres | 52 litres | |
Full fuel tank distance: | 1080 km in combined cycle | 880 km in combined cycle | |
1270 km on highway | 1040 km on highway | ||
1010 km with real consumption | 860 km with real consumption | ||
BMW 3 series gets more mileage on one fuel tank. | |||
Drive type | |||
Wheel drive type: | 4x4 - AWD (all-wheel-drive) | Front wheel drive (FWD) | |
BMW 3 sērija has 4x4: BMW xDrive is a proactive all-wheel drive system without a center differential that engages before the vehicle becomes destabilized, unnoticed by the driver. Torque is distributed between the axles by an electronically controlled multi-plate clutch in the transfer case. The clutch is partially locked most of the time, distributing power to both axles in a 40/60 front/rear ratio, but the system is capable of sending 100% of the torque to either axle. At high speeds or when parking, for example, the clutch is disengaged and all power is sent to the rear wheels. DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) also brakes the wheels individually to regain traction and assist in cornering. | |||
Ground clearance: | 140 mm (5.5 inches) | 160 mm (6.3 inches) | |
Because of the higher ground clearance, Opel Astra can perform better on bad roads - it can go over higher obstacles and bumps. At the same time, the higher ground clearance can reduce stability and handling on paved roads, especially at higher speeds. Note, however, that this Opel Astra version does not have 4x4 drive, which is very important in poor road conditions. | |||
Engines | |||
Average engine lifespan: | 350'000 km | 470'000 km | |
Engine resource depends largely on regular maintenance and the quality of the oils and fuels used, but under equal conditions the average life of a Opel Astra engine could be longer. | |||
Engine production duration: | 17 years | 6 years | |
Engine spread: | Installed on at least 6 other car models, including BMW 5 sērija, BMW 1 sērija, BMW X3, BMW X1 | Installed on at least 3 other car models, including Opel Zafira, Opel Vectra, Opel Signum | |
In general, the longer and for more car models an engine is produced, the better its serviceability and availability of spare parts. BMW 3 series might be a better choice in this respect. | |||
Hydraulic tappets: | yes | no | |
The BMW 3 series engine has hydraulic tappets (lifters), providing quieter operation and no need for periodic adjustment, but they are more complex in design and can cause serious engine damage in case of failure. | |||
Dimensions | |||
Length: | 4.53 m | 4.52 m | |
Width: | 1.82 m | 1.75 m | |
Height: | 1.44 m | 1.50 m | |
BMW 3 series is larger, but lower. BMW 3 series is 1 cm longer than the Opel Astra, 7 cm wider, while the height of BMW 3 series is 6 cm lower. | |||
Trunk capacity: | 460 litres | 500 litres | |
Trunk max capacity: with rear seats folded down |
1385 litres | 1590 litres | |
Opel Astra has more luggage space. Despite its longer length, BMW 3 series has 40 litres less trunk space than the Opel Astra. This could mean that the BMW 3 series uses more space in the cabin, so the driver and passengers could be more spacious and comfortable. The maximum boot capacity (with all rear seats folded down) is larger in Opel Astra (by 205 litres). | |||
Turning diameter: | 11 meters | 11 meters | |
Power steering: | Electric power steering | Hydraulic power steering | |
Electric power steering is simpler, quieter, more fuel-efficient, more configurable and provides additional features such as auto-steering for lane assist and parking. The disadvantages of electric power steering are possible overheating under prolonged load conditions and insufficient feedback (feeling) during steering. | |||
Gross weight (kg): | 2`130 | 1`975 | |
Safety: | no data | ||
Quality: | average | high | |
Opel Astra has fewer problems. According to annual technical inspection data BMW 3 series has serious deffects in 35 percent more cases than Opel Astra, so Opel Astra quality is probably significantly better | |||
Average price (€): | 5800 | 2000 | |
