Drive type

Wheel drive type: 4x4 - AWD (all-wheel-drive)Rear wheel drive (RWD)

BMW 3 sērija has 4x4: BMW xDrive is a proactive all-wheel drive system without a center differential that engages before the vehicle becomes destabilized, unnoticed by the driver. Torque is distributed between the axles by an electronically controlled multi-plate clutch in the transfer case. The clutch is partially locked at most times, distributing power to both axles in a 40/60 front/rear ratio, but the system is capable of sending 100% of the torque to either axle. At higher speeds or when parking, multi-plate clutch is disengaged and all power is transferred to the rear wheels. DSC system (Dynamic Stability Control) also brakes the wheels separately to regain traction and assist in cornering.

Ground clearance: 145 mm (5.7 inches)130 mm (5.1 inches)
Because of the higher ground clearance, BMW 3 series can perform better on bad roads - it can go over higher obstacles and bumps. At the same time, the higher ground clearance can reduce stability and handling on paved roads, especially at higher speeds.

Engines

Average engine lifespan: 330'000 km380'000 km
Engine resource depends largely on regular maintenance and the quality of the oils and fuels used, but under equal conditions the average life of a BMW 1 series engine could be longer.
Engine production duration: 9 years9 years
Engine spread: Installed on at least 11 other car models, including BMW 5 sērija, BMW X5, BMW 7 sērija, BMW 1 sērijaInstalled on at least 3 other car models, including BMW 7 sērija, BMW 6 sērija, BMW 2 sērija
In general, the longer and for more car models an engine is produced, the better its serviceability and availability of spare parts. BMW 3 series might be a better choice in this respect.
