BMW 3 series 2013 vs Opel Astra 2012
Gearbox: | Manual | Manual | |
---|---|---|---|
Engine: | 2.0 Petrol | 1.6 Petrol | |
Camshaft drive: | Timing chain | Timing belt | |
Engine chain usually needs to be replaced less often than the timing belt, but the cost of replacing the chain is usually higher. Chain motors are considered to be more reliable, but noisier and more vibration generating. | |||
Performance | |||
Power: | 184 HP | 180 HP | |
Torque: | 270 NM | 230 NM | |
Acceleration 0-100 km/h: | 7.6 seconds | 8.8 seconds | |
BMW 3 series is more dynamic to drive. BMW 3 series engine produces 4 HP more power than Opel Astra, whereas torque is 40 NM more than Opel Astra. Thanks to more power BMW 3 series reaches 100 km/h speed 1.2 seconds faster. | |||
Fuel consumption | |||
Fuel consumption (l/100km): | 6.9 | 6.8 | |
Real fuel consumption: | 7.9 l/100km | 8.9 l/100km | |
The BMW 3 series is a better choice in terms of fuel economy based on user-reported consumption, although the specification shows otherwise. By specification BMW 3 series consumes 0.1 litres more fuel per 100 km than the Opel Astra, which means that if you drive 15,000 km in a year, the BMW 3 series could require 15 litres more fuel. But when we compare the real fuel consumption reported by users, BMW 3 series consumes 1 litres less fuel per 100 km than the Opel Astra. | |||
Fuel tank capacity: | 60 litres | 56 litres | |
Full fuel tank distance: | 860 km in combined cycle | 820 km in combined cycle | |
1070 km on highway | 1010 km on highway | ||
750 km with real consumption | 620 km with real consumption | ||
Drive type | |||
Wheel drive type: | 4x4 - AWD (all-wheel-drive) | Front wheel drive (FWD) | |
BMW 3 sērija has 4x4: BMW xDrive is a proactive all-wheel drive system without a center differential that engages before the vehicle becomes destabilized, unnoticed by the driver. Torque is distributed between the axles by an electronically controlled multi-plate clutch in the transfer case. The clutch is partially locked most of the time, distributing power to both axles in a 40/60 front/rear ratio, but the system is capable of sending 100% of the torque to either axle. At higher speeds or when parking, multi-plate clutch is disengaged and all power is transferred to the rear wheels. DSC system (Dynamic Stability Control) also brakes the wheels separately to regain traction and assist in cornering. | |||
Ground clearance: | 145 mm (5.7 inches) | 165 mm (6.5 inches) | |
Because of the higher ground clearance, Opel Astra can perform better on bad roads - it can go over higher obstacles and bumps. At the same time, the higher ground clearance can reduce stability and handling on paved roads, especially at higher speeds. Note, however, that this Opel Astra version does not have 4x4 drive, which is very important in poor road conditions. | |||
Engines | |||
Engine production duration: | 7 years | 5 years | |
Engine spread: | Installed on at least 8 other car models, including BMW 5 sērija, BMW 1 sērija, BMW X3, BMW X1 | Used also on Opel Insignia | |
In general, the longer and for more car models an engine is produced, the better its serviceability and availability of spare parts. BMW 3 series might be a better choice in this respect. | |||
Hydraulic tappets: | yes | no | |
The BMW 3 series engine has hydraulic tappets (lifters), providing quieter operation and no need for periodic adjustment, but they are more complex in design and can cause serious engine damage in case of failure. | |||
Dimensions | |||
Length: | 4.62 m | 4.70 m | |
Width: | 1.81 m | 1.81 m | |
Height: | 1.43 m | 1.54 m | |
BMW 3 series is smaller. BMW 3 series is 7 cm shorter than the Opel Astra, width is practically the same , while the height of BMW 3 series is 11 cm lower. | |||
Trunk capacity: | 495 litres | 500 litres | |
Trunk max capacity: with rear seats folded down |
1500 litres | 1550 litres | |
BMW 3 series has 5 litres less trunk space than the Opel Astra. The maximum boot capacity (with all rear seats folded down) is larger in Opel Astra (by 50 litres). | |||
Turning diameter: | 11.3 meters | 11.5 meters | |
The turning circle of the BMW 3 series is 0.2 metres less than that of the Opel Astra. | |||
Gross weight (kg): | 2`105 | 2`010 | |
