BMW 3 series 2018 vs BMW X1 2019

BMW 3 series
2018 - 2020
BMW X1
2019 - 2022
Body: Estate car / wagonCrossover / SUV
Crossovers and SUVs have better off-road capabilities (higher ground clearance, can have 4x4 drive), they are preferable for driving on unpaved roads and rural areas. Also, the driver's seating position is higher in a crossover or SUVs, which provides better visibility also in city. This usually comes at the cost of higher fuel consumption, increased weight and higher maintenance costs.

Performance

Power: 190 HP231 HP
Torque: 400 NM450 NM
Acceleration 0-100 km/h: 7.4 seconds6.6 seconds
BMW X1 is a more dynamic driving.
BMW 3 series engine produces 41 HP less power than BMW X1, whereas torque is 50 NM less than BMW X1. Due to the lower power, BMW 3 series reaches 100 km/h speed 0.8 seconds later.

Fuel consumption

Fuel consumption (l/100km): 4.65.2
Real fuel consumption: 6.5 l/100km6.6 l/100km
The BMW 3 series is a better choice when it comes to fuel economy.
By specification BMW 3 series consumes 0.6 litres less fuel per 100 km than the BMW X1, which means that by driving the BMW 3 series over 15,000 km in a year you can save 90 litres of fuel.
By comparing actual fuel consumption based on user reports, BMW 3 series consumes 0.1 litres less fuel per 100 km than the BMW X1.

Drive type

Wheel drive type: 4x4 - AWD (all-wheel-drive)4x4 - AWD (all-wheel-drive)

BMW 3 sērija 2018: BMW xDrive is a proactive all-wheel drive system without a center differential that engages before the vehicle becomes destabilized, unnoticed by the driver. Torque is distributed between the axles by an electronically controlled multi-plate clutch in the transfer case. The clutch is partially locked at most times, distributing power to both axles in a 40/60 front/rear ratio, but the system is capable of sending 100% of the torque to either axle. At higher speeds or when parking, multi-plate clutch is disengaged and all power is transferred to the rear wheels. DSC system (Dynamic Stability Control) also brakes the wheels separately to regain traction and assist in cornering.

BMW X1 2019: This generation BMW features the Haldex Generation V proactive all-wheel-drive system, which sends 100% of torque to the front wheels as standard. The system analyzes data from the ABS and engine control units and can increase pressure on the multi-disc clutch for faster engagement if required. If wheel spin is detected, torque can be split evenly between the axles (50%/50%).

Ground clearance: 135 mm (5.3 inches)183 mm (7.2 inches)
Because of the higher ground clearance, BMW X1 can perform better on bad roads - it can go over higher obstacles and bumps. At the same time, the higher ground clearance can reduce stability and handling on paved roads, especially at higher speeds.

Engines

Average engine lifespan: 330'000 km330'000 km
Engine resource depends largely on regular maintenance and the quality of the oils and fuels used.
Engine production duration: 12 years12 years
Engine spread: Installed on at least 6 other car models, including BMW 5 sērija, BMW 1 sērija, BMW X3, BMW 2 sērijaUsed also on BMW X2
In general, the longer and for more car models an engine is produced, the better its serviceability and availability of spare parts. BMW 3 series might be a better choice in this respect.
