BMW 525d Touring (Touring F10)

BMW 5 series 2013 2.0 diesel description

Estate car / wagon BMW 525d Touring has been produced from January, 2013 to January, 2016. It has four-cylinder diesel engine with displacement of 2.0 litres, which produces power of 218 horsepower on 4400 rpm and torque 450 Nm (Newton metres) on 1500 revolutions per minute.

This 4-cylinder 16-valve engine camshaft is driven by chain (What is an engine chain and belt? ). Engine has Common Rail fuel system and TwinTurbo turbine. Engine versions compliant with Euro 5 and Euro 6 emission standards available. Engine lifespan (mileage before major repairs or overhaul) can last from 180 up to 300 thousand kilometres. Note that engine life can be longer or shorter depending on maintenance.
More engine specs
Because of problems with the timing chain, which tends to stretch at 100,000 km, the BMW N47  ...  This BMW 5 series 2.0 engine oil type is 5W-30 and oil capacity is 5.2 litres.

BMW 525d Touring has classical rear wheel drive (RWD) and manual gearbox with 6 gears.
BMW 525d Touring accelerates to speed 100 kilometres per hour in 7.2 seconds. The maximum speed of this car is 240 km/h.

BMW 525d Touring fuel consumption is 5.2 litres per 100km in combined city/highway mode (19.2 km/l) - this is one of most fuel efficient BMW 5 sērija 2013 - 2017 versions, city fuel economy - 6.2 l/100km, fuel consumption on highway - 4.6 l/100km. Fuel tank capacity is 70 litres or 18.49 gallons, which gives a mileage up to 1340 kilometers without refueling in urban cycle and even up to 1520 kilometers on highway.
According to user reviews, this BMW real everyday fuel consumption is 7.5 litres per 100 km, which is 44% more than the manufacturer's stated. More - Real BMW 5 series fuel consumption.

With the same engine there are also two other BMW 5 series versions - with automatic gearbox (BMW 525d Touring AT), and with four wheel (4x4) drive and automatic gearbox (BMW 525d xDrive Touring AT 4x4) available:
  • BMW 525d Touring AT manufacturer's fuel consumption is lower by 0.3 litres per 100 km or 6 % - 4.9 litres per 100 km, whereas users reported real fuel consumption is lower by 0.6 litres per 100 km or 8 % - 6.9 litres per 100 km
  • BMW 525d xDrive Touring AT 4x4 manufacturer's fuel consumption is higher by 0.2 litres per 100 km or 4 % - 5.4 litres per 100 km, whereas users reported real fuel consumption is higher by 0.2 litres per 100 km or 3 % - 7.7 litres per 100 km

Engine reliability and common problems:

Because of problems with the timing chain, which tends to stretch at 100,000 km, the BMW N47 engine is sometimes called the worst BMW engine. In addition, the engine has to be removed from the car in order to replace the timing chain. The cause of the timing chain problem is said to have been eliminated for engines produced after 2015. Also, the crankshaft damper on this engine does not tend to last very long. Cracks tend to form between the cylinders as the engine overheats.
Overall, this engine can last around 180,000 to 300,000 km if properly maintained, using the correct quality oil and fuel, and carrying out regular checks and maintenance.
The engine has hydraulic valve tappets (lifters), which provide quieter operation and do not require periodic adjustment, but are more complex in design and can cause serious engine damage in the event of failure.
Engine displacement 1995 cm3
Number of cylinders 4
Bore (cylinder diameter) 84 mm
Stroke length (piston move) 90 mm
Compression ratio 16.5 : 1
Camshaft drive Timing chain

Chain motors are considered more reliable, chain replacement usually is required less often than a timing belt, but they are often louder and vibrate more.

Fuel system Common Rail

Common rail fuel injection provides more engine power, is quieter, more environmentally friendly and offers better fuel economy, but is more expensive to maintain and repair.

BMW 525d Touring oil type 5W-30
Oil capacity 5.2 litres (5.5 quarts)
Coolant capacity 10.6 litres (11.2 quarts)

Start of production (year) 2007
Duration of production 17 years
Engine also used on BMW 3 sērija BMW X5 BMW 1 sērija BMW X1 and 3 other models

Generally, the use of an engine in several models and its long production run is an indication of the quality of the engine and the success of its design.
