Nissan Primastar is a medium van and passenger minibus introduced in 2002 as Nissan’s version of the Renault Trafic and Opel Vivaro project. It was aimed at trades, shuttle use and family transport, using a front-wheel-drive layout, wide load bay and multiple body lengths and roof heights.
The first generation shared the X83 platform with its sister vans. It was offered as a panel van, crew van and Combi, with short or long wheelbases and low or high roof versions. Engines included 1.9 dCi, 2.0 dCi and 2.5 dCi diesels, with outputs commonly from about 82 to 150 horsepower. Manual gearboxes were most common, while some later versions offered automatic transmission. The 2006 update brought revised front styling and cleaner 2.0 dCi engines.
After the Primastar name was replaced by NV300 in many markets, Nissan revived it in 2021 for the updated Trafic-based van. This version uses 2.0-liter dCi diesel engines with outputs around 110 to 170 horsepower, front-wheel drive and manual, dual-clutch or newer automatic transmissions depending on market. It added more modern infotainment, safety systems and improved cab comfort.
In user reviews, the Nissan Primastar is usually judged like a tool rather than a toy. Owners value its roomy body, economical diesels, comfortable driving position and relatively cheap parts shared with related vans. Passenger versions are liked for long-trip comfort and space. Complaints tend to appear after hard use: gearbox and clutch wear, suspension knocks, cabin rattles, noisy interiors and electrical niggles.
