The Nissan Pathfinder is a midsize SUV that has evolved from a rugged body-on-frame vehicle into a more refined, family-oriented crossover. First introduced in 1986, it has gone through five generations, each reflecting changing trends in the SUV market.

The third generation (R51, 2005–2012) retained the traditional body-on-frame construction and was available with petrol and diesel engines, including a 4.0-liter V6 and a 2.5-liter diesel. It offered optional third-row seating, strong towing capacity, and true off-road capability with available four-wheel drive.

The fourth generation (R52, 2013–2020) marked a significant transition to a unibody platform, focusing more on comfort and fuel efficiency. It featured a 3.5-liter V6 engine paired with a CVT transmission, front- or all-wheel drive, and improved interior space and ride quality. The Pathfinder became more suitable for families, with modern infotainment, safety features, and available seven-seat configuration.

The fifth generation, launched in 2021, reintroduces a more rugged appearance and replaces the CVT with a 9-speed automatic transmission. Powered by an updated 3.5-liter V6, it combines improved towing capability with better driving dynamics. The cabin offers advanced driver-assist systems, digital displays, and flexible seating for up to eight passengers. Nissan did not import the fifth-generation Pathfinder to Europe or the UK — it’s limited to North America and select markets

In user reviews, the Nissan Pathfinder is praised for its interior space, comfortable ride, and family-friendly features. The latest models are appreciated for their technology upgrades and easier handling. Criticisms include limited off-road capability in unibody generations and mixed feedback on earlier CVT performance. Overall, the Pathfinder remains a popular choice for buyers seeking a versatile and spacious midsize SUV.
