Mercedes-Benz R-Class is a large luxury MPV/crossover produced from 2006 to 2014, with later production focused on China. Built on the W251/V251 platform and related to the M-Class and GL-Class, it combined elements of an estate, minivan and SUV. The R-Class was offered in standard and long-wheelbase versions, with seating for six or seven passengers. Most models used 4Matic all-wheel drive, although rear-wheel-drive versions existed in some markets. Engine choices included 3.0- and 3.5-liter V6 petrol units, 5.0- and 5.5-liter V8 engines, a 3.0-liter V6 diesel, and the rare R 63 AMG with a 6.2-liter V8 producing around 510 horsepower. Transmissions were mainly 7G-Tronic automatic units.
Technically, the R-Class emphasized long-distance comfort rather than sharp handling. Air suspension was available, improving ride quality and load control, while the long-wheelbase version offered exceptional rear passenger space. Later updates brought revised styling, cleaner engines and improved infotainment, but the unusual body concept kept it outside mainstream luxury SUV demand.
In user reviews, the Mercedes-Benz R-Class is often described as a car people misunderstand until they actually use it. Owners appreciate the huge cabin, relaxed cruising ability, strong diesel torque and genuine family practicality without the upright feel of a van. The AMG and V8 versions are admired for effortless power, though rarely bought with economy in mind. Criticism usually targets high repair costs, complex air suspension, expensive electronics, heavy fuel consumption in petrol models and awkward city maneuverability due to its size.
