This generation of Land Rover Discovery 2 FL has been produced from July, 2002 to December, 2004. We can provide information about 4 modifications of this generation. 2002 Land Rover Discovery comes with four wheel drive (4x4). Four wheel drive models have full time 4WD system (permanent four-wheel drive that can be used on pavement).
In 1998, the new Land Rover Discovery II was introduced. The vehicle is externally very similar to first generation, but it has been completely redesigned. Discovery II is noticeably larger and more spacious. Wheelbase remains the same, but the length has increased by 18 cm.
The fundamentals of off-road based ideology of Discovery II remained unchanged - the frame construction and dependent suspension with rigid axles in front and rear. However, the all-wheel drive system became different. As before, it uses permanent four-wheel drive, but now locking feature from central differential was removed, and locking feature replaced by electronic traction control system, which brakes slipping wheels. Must be said that technically central differential lock was left in central differential, only the locking lever was removed, so there is possibility to add central differential lock. Central differential lock was again available for last models of Discovery II (year 2004).
Four-channel ABS with electronic brake force distribution and Hill Descent Control (HDS), which limits speed on steep gradients, are standard on all Discovery models. The most expensive Discovery II variants have an air rear suspension, which automatically maintains the level of the body above the road regardless of the degree of loading of the vehicle and allows to raise it in difficult off-road situations.
The front and rear axles are suspended on twin wishbones. At the rear, a Watts mechanism is used to absorb transverse forces, while at the front a more conventional Panara linkage is fitted. The air suspension version also comes with Active Cornering Enhancement (ACE), a system that changes the rigidity of the anti-roll bars. It is complex electro-hydraulic system is intended to resolve the contradiction between the need for long suspension travel when driving off-road and the desire to reduce cornering in normal conditions.
Engines were also changed. The petrol V8 has been upgraded and a completely new five-cylinder 2.5 litre turbo diesel (TD5) replaced previous diesel. Interior design is no less conservative than the exterior of the car, all the controls are in their usual places.
Rear passengers can hardly complain of cramped space in all directions. The space above the head is huge, because the roof over the rear part of the saloon, as, however, on the first generation Discovery, is noticeably raised.
This Land Rover is available with one petrol engine with displacement 4.0 litres and power of 185 HP un one diesel engine with displacement 2.5 litres and power of 137 HP.
The car is available with both manual (2 versions), as well as automatic (2 versions) gearbox.
