Kia Sorento is a midsize SUV introduced in 2002 and developed through four main generations. It began as a more traditional off-road vehicle and gradually evolved into a family-focused crossover with hybrid options. A precise worldwide production total is not consistently published, but the Sorento has remained one of Kia’s important global SUV models.
The first generation (BL, 2002–2009) used body-on-frame construction, rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive and engines such as 2.4-liter petrol, V6 petrol units and 2.5-liter CRDi diesel. The second generation (XM, 2009–2014) moved to a unibody platform, improving road comfort and efficiency. It offered front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, 2.4-liter petrol engines, V6 versions in some markets and 2.0- or 2.2-liter CRDi diesels.
The third generation (UM, 2014–2020) became larger and more refined, with five- or seven-seat layouts, improved safety systems and engines including 2.4 GDI, 2.0 turbo petrol, 3.3 V6 and 2.2 CRDi diesel. The fourth generation (MQ4), launched in 2020 and facelifted from 2023/2024 depending on market, added 2.5 petrol and turbo engines, 2.2 diesel, plus 1.6 T-GDi hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains with outputs around 227 and 261 horsepower.
In user reviews, the Kia Sorento is often treated as a sensible family SUV that becomes more convincing the longer people live with it. Owners like the roomy cabin, seven-seat usefulness, strong diesel torque and good equipment levels for the price. Newer hybrids are appreciated for quiet city driving and lower fuel use. Complaints usually involve firm ride on larger wheels, average third-row space for adults, higher fuel consumption in petrol versions and repair costs on high-mileage diesel or AWD models.
