Since late 2000, Ford Motor Company has been manufacturing and marketing the Ford Escape, a compact crossover SUV. Positioned between the Ford EcoSport and Ford Edge in size, the Escape was the first Ford SUV to be derived from a car platform. It's smaller than the Ford Explorer and made history in 2004 when the Escape Hybrid became Ford's first hybrid-electric vehicle and the first hybrid SUV on the market.
In Europe, it was initially sold as the Ford Maverick from 2001 to 2008. Under Ford's mid-2000s "One Ford" globalization strategy, the third and fourth-generation Escape designs were unified with the Ford Kuga, which was designed by Ford of Europe. These newer models share a common body, chassis underpinnings, and several engines, though they are manufactured in their respective home markets.
The first two generations of the Escape utilized the Ford CD2 platform, which was jointly developed with Mazda.
