Cupra Formentor is a compact crossover introduced in 2020 as the Cupra brand’s model developed independently rather than derived directly from a SEAT product. Built on Volkswagen Group’s MQB Evo platform, it combines coupe-like SUV styling with performance-oriented engineering. Production takes place in Spain, and the model represents a core pillar of Cupra’s standalone identity.
The engine lineup ranges from efficient 1.5-liter TSI petrol engines producing around 150 horsepower to high-performance 2.0-liter TSI units delivering up to 310 horsepower in the VZ variants. A plug-in hybrid version pairs a 1.4-liter TSI engine with an electric motor, producing a combined output of 204 or 245 horsepower and offering an electric driving range of around 50–60 km under WLTP conditions. Transmissions include 6-speed manual and 7-speed DSG gearboxes, with front-wheel drive or 4Drive all-wheel drive depending on specification.
Chassis tuning emphasizes dynamic response, featuring adaptive suspension, progressive steering, and torque vectoring systems in higher-performance versions. The interior combines digital instrumentation with a large central touchscreen and copper-accented design details typical of the Cupra brand. Advanced driver assistance systems include travel assist, adaptive cruise control, and predictive safety technologies.
In user reviews, the Cupra Formentor is frequently described as a car that appeals as much to emotion as to logic. Owners often mention how its sharp styling and low, wide stance make it stand out in a crowded SUV segment. The more powerful versions are praised for strong acceleration and confident grip, while plug-in hybrid models are appreciated for their quiet electric commuting ability. At the same time, some drivers observe that rear visibility can be limited due to the sloping roofline, suspension settings may feel firm in sportier trims, and fully equipped versions can become expensive. For many buyers, however, its blend of design flair and real performance gives it a character that goes beyond that of a conventional crossover.
