Citroen C3 is a supermini introduced in 2002 as the successor to the Citroen Saxo. It has gone through three main generations and has become one of Citroen’s core models in the European B-segment. Over its lifetime, global production has exceeded five million units, reflecting its importance in the brand’s lineup.
The first generation (2002–2010) was built on PSA’s PF1 platform and offered a range of small petrol and diesel engines from 1.1 to 1.6 liters. It focused on comfort, featuring soft suspension tuning and a practical five-door body style. A facelift in 2005 updated styling and interior quality. Performance-oriented variants such as the C3 VTS introduced a more powerful 1.6-liter petrol engine with around 110 horsepower.
The second generation (2010–2016) introduced a more rounded design and improved interior materials. Engine options included updated VTi petrol and HDi diesel units, with improved fuel efficiency and lower emissions. The model emphasized ride comfort and practicality, while maintaining compact exterior dimensions suitable for urban use.
The third generation, launched in 2016 and later updated in 2020, adopted Citroen’s new design language with split headlights and customizable Airbump side panels. It was built on the PSA PF1 platform in modified form and offered 1.2-liter PureTech petrol engines and 1.5-liter BlueHDi diesel engines. Advanced driver assistance systems, touchscreen infotainment, and increased personalization became key features.
In user reviews, the Citroen C3 is frequently described as a comfort-focused small car with a relaxed personality. Owners often highlight the soft suspension that absorbs city potholes with ease and the distinctive styling that stands out in traffic. The PureTech engines are praised for their balance between efficiency and adequate performance. However, some drivers point to average cabin materials in lower trims, limited rear legroom for taller passengers, and infotainment systems that can feel slow to respond. For many buyers, its individuality and comfort outweigh its minor shortcomings.
Is Citroen C3 a reliable car?
The Citroen C3 is not a very reliable car. 75% of other cars of the same age are found to have fewer defects than the Citroen C3 in annual roadworthiness tests.
Based on annual roadworthiness tests results, the Citroen C3 generation produced from 2016 to 2020 received the highest reliability ratings, but the lowest reliability had models from model year 2013 to 2016.
Most Citroen C3 are equipped with timing belt engines, which are generally considered less reliable than timing chain engines.

Pros: Small but comfortable. A good boost, perfect for the city. At long distances comfort speed is 85 km/h ... but I was already expecting it from the small engine.
Cons: I didn't expect much more for that price :)
