BMW X1 2012 xDrive25d (E84)

BMW X1 2012 2.0 diesel description

Crossover / SUV BMW X1 2012 xDrive25d has been produced from January, 2012 to January, 2015. It has four-cylinder diesel engine with displacement of 2.0 litres, which produces power of 218 horsepower on 4000 rpm and torque 450 Nm (Newton metres) on 1500 revolutions per minute.

This 4-cylinder 16-valve engine camshaft is driven by chain (What is an engine chain and belt? ). Engine has Common Rail fuel system and TwinTurbo turbine. Engine versions compliant with Euro 5 and Euro 6 emission standards available. Approximate engine life expectancy (mileage until serious repairs are required) for this engine is between 180 000 and 300 000 kilometres. Note that engine life can be longer or shorter depending on maintenance.
More engine specs
Because of problems with the timing chain, which tends to stretch at 100,000 km, the BMW N47  ...  This BMW X1 2.0 engine oil type is 5W-30 and oil capacity is 5.2 litres.

BMW X1 2012 xDrive25d has AWD (all wheel drive) (power is automatically distributed between the wheel axles) and automatic gearbox with 8 gears. BMW xDrive is a proactive all-wheel drive system without a center differential that engages before the vehicle becomes unstable, unnoticed by the driver. Torque is distributed between the axles via an electronically controlled multi-plate clutch located in the transfer case. Most of the time, the clutch is partially locked and power is transferred to both axles in a 40/60 front/rear ratio, but the system is capable of sending 100% of the torque to either axle. At high speeds or when parking, for example, the clutch is disengaged and all power is sent to the rear wheels. DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) also brakes the wheels individually to regain traction and assist in cornering.
BMW X1 2012 xDrive25d accelerates to speed 100 kilometres per hour in 6.8 seconds. The maximum speed of this car is 228 km/h.

In combined cycle (city and motorway), the BMW X1 2012 xDrive25d fuel consumption is 5.5 litres per 100km (18.2 km/l), fuel consumption in city - 6.3 l/100km, highway fuel economy - 5.1 l/100km. Fuel tank capacity is 61 litres or 16.12 gallons, which gives a mileage up to 1100 kilometers without refueling in urban cycle and even up to 1180 kilometers on highway.
According to user reviews, this BMW real everyday fuel consumption is 7.2 litres per 100 km, which is 31% more than the manufacturer's stated. More - Real BMW X1 fuel consumption.

BMW X1 safety

During safety testing BMW X1 has obtained 5 stars from five, which means very high safety level.
Adults (driver and passenger) safety of BMW X1 is evaluated with very good rate 87 from 100, children safety: very good mark - 86 from 100, for pedestrian protection BMW X1 got 64 points from 100.
BMW X1 safety equipment has been rated as good - 71 percents from 100.

With the same engine there is also BMW X1 version with manual gearbox (BMW X1 2012 2.0 xDrive25d MT 4x4) available, which manufacturer's fuel consumption is higher by 0.4 litres per 100 km or 7 % - 5.9 litres per 100 km.

Engine reliability and common problems:

Because of problems with the timing chain, which tends to stretch at 100,000 km, the BMW N47 engine is sometimes called the worst BMW engine. In addition, the engine has to be removed from the car in order to replace the timing chain. The cause of the timing chain problem is said to have been eliminated for engines produced after 2015. Also, the crankshaft damper on this engine does not tend to last very long. Cracks tend to form between the cylinders as the engine overheats.
Overall, this engine can last around 180,000 to 300,000 km if properly maintained, using the correct quality oil and fuel, and carrying out regular checks and maintenance.
The engine has hydraulic valve tappets (lifters), which provide quieter operation and do not require periodic adjustment, but are more complex in design and can cause serious engine damage in the event of failure.
Engine displacement 1995 cm3
Number of cylinders 4
Bore (cylinder diameter) 84 mm
Stroke length (piston move) 90 mm
Compression ratio 16.5 : 1
Camshaft drive Timing chain

Chain motors are considered more reliable, chain replacement usually is required less often than a timing belt, but they are often louder and vibrate more.

Fuel system Common Rail

Common rail fuel injection provides more engine power, is quieter, more environmentally friendly and offers better fuel economy, but is more expensive to maintain and repair.

BMW X1 2012 xDrive25d oil type 5W-30
Oil capacity 5.2 litres (5.5 quarts)
Coolant capacity 7.9 litres (8.4 quarts)
Power 218 HP ON 4000 RPM

Start of production (year) 2007
Duration of production 17 years
Engine also used on BMW 5 sērija BMW 3 sērija BMW X5 BMW 1 sērija and 3 other models

Generally, the use of an engine in several models and its long production run is an indication of the quality of the engine and the success of its design.
