BMW 420d (Gran Coupe)

BMW 4 series 2013 2.0 diesel description

Sedan BMW 420d has been produced from January, 2013 to January, 2017. It has four-cylinder diesel engine with displacement of 2.0 litres, which produces power of 184 horsepower on 4000 rpm and torque 380 Nm (Newton metres) on 1750 revolutions per minute.

This 4-cylinder 16-valve engine camshaft is driven by chain (What is an engine chain and belt? ). Engine has Common Rail fuel system and turbine. Engine versions compliant with Euro 5 and Euro 6 emission standards available. Average engine life expectancy (mileage before serious repairs are needed) is from 210 000 to 360 000 kilometres. Remember that engine life depends on regular maintenance and the quality of the materials used (oils, fuels, etc.).
More engine specs
Because of problems with the timing chain, which tends to stretch at 100,000 km, the BMW N47  ...  This BMW 4 series 2.0 engine oil type is 5W-30 and oil capacity is 5.2 litres.

BMW 420d has classical rear wheel drive (RWD) and automatic gearbox with 8 gears.
BMW 420d accelerates to speed 100 kilometres per hour in 7.5 seconds. The maximum speed of this car is 232 km/h.

The fuel consumption of this BMW 420d in combined mode (combining urban and highway driving) is 4.6 litres per 100km (21.7 km/l) - this is one of most fuel efficient BMW 4 sērija 2013 - 2017 versions, city fuel economy - 5.4 l/100km, fuel consumption on highway - 4.1 l/100km. Fuel tank capacity is 57 litres or 15.06 gallons, which gives a mileage up to 1220 kilometers without refueling in urban cycle and even up to 1380 kilometers on highway.
According to user reviews, this BMW real everyday fuel consumption is 6.3 litres per 100 km, which is 37% more than the manufacturer's stated. More - Real BMW 4 series fuel consumption.

With the same engine there are also three other BMW 4 series versions - with manual gearbox (BMW 4 Series 2013 2.0 Gran Coupe (F36) 420d MT), and with four wheel (4x4) drive and manual gearbox (BMW 4 Series 2013 2.0 Gran Coupe (F36) 420d xDrive MT 4x4), and with four wheel (4x4) drive and automatic gearbox (BMW 420d AT 4x4) available:
  • BMW 4 Series 2013 2.0 Gran Coupe (F36) 420d MT manufacturer's fuel consumption is similar - 4.7 litres per 100 km, whereas users reported real fuel consumption is lower by 0.4 litres per 100 km or 6 % - 5.9 litres per 100 km
  • BMW 4 Series 2013 2.0 Gran Coupe (F36) 420d xDrive MT 4x4 manufacturer's fuel consumption is higher by 0.3 litres per 100 km or 7 % - 4.9 litres per 100 km, whereas users reported real fuel consumption is lower by 0.4 litres per 100 km or 6 % - 5.9 litres per 100 km
  • BMW 420d AT 4x4 manufacturer's fuel consumption is higher by 0.2 litres per 100 km or 4 % - 4.8 litres per 100 km, whereas users reported real fuel consumption is similar - 6.3 litres per 100 km

Engine reliability and common problems:

Because of problems with the timing chain, which tends to stretch at 100,000 km, the BMW N47 engine is sometimes called the worst BMW engine. Replacing the timing chain also requires removing the engine from the car. For engines produced after 2015, the cause of the timing chain problem has reportedly been eliminated. Also, the crankshaft damper on this engine does not tend to last very long. Cracking between the cylinders tends to occur due to the engine overheating.
Overall, this engine can last around 210,000 to 360,000 km if properly maintained, using the correct quality oil and fuel, and carrying out regular checks and maintenance.
The engine has hydraulic valve tappets (lifters), which provide quieter operation and do not require periodic adjustment, but are more complex in design and can cause serious engine damage in the event of failure.
Engine displacement 1995 cm3
Number of cylinders 4
Bore (cylinder diameter) 84 mm
Stroke length (piston move) 90 mm
Compression ratio 16.5 : 1
Camshaft drive Timing chain

Chain motors are considered more reliable, chain replacement usually is required less often than a timing belt, but they are often louder and vibrate more.

Timing chain change interval 100,000 km (recommended)

Sometimes manufacturers do not specify timing chain replacement intervals and design chains for engine life. However, once the recommended change interval has been reached, it is recommended to periodically check the condition of the chain and to change the chain if excessive stretching is detected or if unusual noises from the engine or other symptoms occur.

Fuel system Common Rail

Common rail fuel injection provides more engine power, is quieter, more environmentally friendly and offers better fuel economy, but is more expensive to maintain and repair.
