Audi S3 is the performance version of the Audi A3, produced since 1999 as a compact premium hot hatch and later also as a sedan or cabriolet in some markets. It uses turbocharged petrol engines and quattro all-wheel drive as standard.
The late first generation 8L, relevant after 2000, used a 1.8-liter turbocharged four-cylinder with 210–225 horsepower, manual transmission and Haldex-based quattro. The 8P generation, launched in 2006, moved to a 2.0 TFSI engine with about 265 horsepower and came as a three-door or Sportback. The 8V generation from 2013 increased output to around 300–310 horsepower, added sedan and cabriolet bodies, and used manual or S tronic gearboxes depending on market. The 8Y generation, introduced in 2020, kept the 2.0 TFSI with about 310 horsepower and S tronic transmission. The 2024 update raised output to 333 PS and 420 Nm, adding a torque splitter and sharper driving modes.
In user reviews, the Audi S3 is often seen as the grown-up hot hatch: quick, secure and easy to use daily without shouting about it. Owners like its acceleration, quattro traction, compact size and quality interior. It is praised for winter confidence and easy overtaking, but some drivers find it less playful than front-wheel-drive rivals. Criticism also includes firm ride quality, expensive maintenance, tight rear seats and costly repairs when DSG or Haldex servicing has been neglected.
