Audi Q7 is a large premium SUV introduced in 2005 as Audi’s first full-size SUV. Built on Volkswagen Group’s longitudinal-engine SUV platforms, it combines seven-seat practicality, quattro all-wheel drive and long-distance comfort. Audi reported that more than 550,000 customers chose the first generation before its production ended in 2015; a complete worldwide total for all Q7 generations is not consistently published.
The first generation (4L, 2005–2015) was based on the same broad engineering family as the Volkswagen Touareg and Porsche Cayenne but was larger and more family-oriented. Engines included 3.0 TDI and 4.2 TDI diesels, 3.6 FSI and 4.2 FSI petrol units, and the rare 6.0-liter V12 TDI with 500 horsepower. It offered air suspension, strong towing ability and a spacious cabin, though its size and weight made it feel less agile than smaller SUVs.
The second generation (4M), launched in 2015, moved to the MLB Evo platform and became lighter, more efficient and more refined. Engine choices included 3.0 TDI, 3.0 TFSI, later mild-hybrid V6 units and plug-in hybrid e-tron/TFSI e versions. The SQ7 added high-performance V8 engines. Updates in 2019 and 2024 brought sharper lighting, revised infotainment, cleaner engines and expanded assistance systems.
In user reviews, the Audi Q7 is often described as a car that makes long journeys feel smaller. Owners like its quiet cabin, strong diesel torque, confident quattro grip and genuine family space. It is appreciated for towing, winter driving and highway comfort. The usual complaints are predictable for a heavy luxury SUV: expensive maintenance, costly air suspension repairs, high tire and brake wear, limited city maneuverability and fuel consumption that rises quickly in petrol or performance versions.
