Audi Q5 is a compact premium SUV introduced in 2008 and positioned between the Q3 and Q7. It became one of Audi’s most important volume models, using longitudinal-engine platforms and quattro all-wheel drive on many versions. Based on published annual production figures, more than 4.1 million Q5 units were produced worldwide by the end of 2024.
The first generation (8R, 2008–2017) was built on the MLB platform and offered 2.0 TFSI petrol, 3.0 TFSI V6, 2.0 TDI and 3.0 TDI engines. Transmissions included manual, S tronic and Tiptronic units depending on engine. It focused on a more car-like driving feel than many SUVs, while the SQ5 added a strong V6 diesel or petrol engine depending on market.
The second generation (FY, 2017–2024) moved to the lighter MLB Evo platform and brought improved safety systems, digital displays and more efficient engines. It included 2.0 TFSI, 2.0 TDI, V6 versions and plug-in hybrid TFSI e models. The Sportback body style was added later, giving the range a coupe-like alternative.
The third generation, launched for 2025, uses the new Premium Platform Combustion architecture with MHEV plus technology. Petrol and diesel engines continue, while the cabin adopts a more digital layout and updated assistance systems.
In user reviews, the Audi Q5 is often described as a car that does family duty without feeling like a compromise. Owners like its quiet cabin, secure road manners, strong diesels and high-quality interior. It feels polished in daily use and confident on long trips, but criticism often targets expensive repairs, firm suspension on large wheels, average rear-seat space and costly servicing once mileage rises.
