BMW 118d (E87)

BMW 1 series 2007 2.0 diesel description

Hatchback BMW 118d has been produced from March, 2007 to January, 2011. It has four-cylinder diesel engine with displacement of 2.0 litres, which produces power of 143 horsepower on 4000 rpm and torque 300 Nm (Newton metres) on 2000 revolutions per minute.

This 4-cylinder 16-valve engine camshaft is driven by chain (What is an engine chain and belt? ). Engine has Common Rail fuel system and turbine. The engine meets the Euro 5 emissions standard. Approximate engine life expectancy (mileage until serious repairs are required) for this engine is between 220 000 and 370 000 kilometres. Note that engine life can be longer or shorter depending on maintenance.
More engine specs
The BMW N47 engine is sometimes called the worst BMW engine because of problems with the timing  ...  This BMW 1 series 2.0 engine oil type is 5W-30 and oil capacity is 5.2 litres.

BMW 118d has classical rear wheel drive (RWD) and manual gearbox with 6 gears.
BMW 118d accelerates to speed 100 kilometres per hour in 9 seconds. The maximum speed of this car is 210 km/h.

In combined cycle (city and motorway), the BMW 118d fuel consumption is 4.5 litres per 100km (22.2 km/l) - this is one of most fuel efficient BMW 1 sērija 2007 - 2011 versions, fuel consumption in city - 5.4 l/100km, highway fuel economy - 4 l/100km. Fuel tank capacity is 51 litres or 13.47 gallons, which gives a mileage up to 1120 kilometers without refueling in urban cycle and even up to 1260 kilometers on highway.
According to user reviews, this BMW real everyday fuel consumption is 5.8 litres per 100 km, which is 29% more than the manufacturer's stated. More - Real BMW 1 series fuel consumption.

With the same engine there is also BMW 1 series version with automatic gearbox (BMW 118d AT) available, which manufacturer's fuel consumption is higher by 0.9 litres per 100 km or 20 % - 5.4 litres per 100 km, whereas users reported real fuel consumption is higher by 0.8 litres per 100 km or 14 % - 6.6 litres per 100 km.

Engine reliability and common problems:

The BMW N47 engine is sometimes called the worst BMW engine because of problems with the timing chain, which tends to stretch at 100 000 km. In addition, the engine has to be removed from the car to replace the timing chain. The cause of the timing chain problem was reportedly eliminated for engines produced after 2015. Also, the crankshaft damper on this engine tends not to last very long. Cracks between the cylinders tend to appear due to overheating of the engine.
Overall, this engine can last around 220,000 to 370,000 km if properly maintained, using the correct quality oil and fuel, and carrying out regular checks and maintenance.
The engine has hydraulic valve tappets (lifters), which provide quieter operation and do not require periodic adjustment, but are more complex in design and can cause serious engine damage in the event of failure.

Number of cylinders 4

Stroke length (piston move) 90 mm
Compression ratio 16 : 1
Camshaft drive Timing chain

Chain motors are considered more reliable, chain replacement usually is required less often than a timing belt, but they are often louder and vibrate more.

Timing chain change interval 100,000 km (recommended)

Sometimes manufacturers do not specify timing chain replacement intervals and design chains for engine life. However, once the recommended change interval has been reached, it is recommended to periodically check the condition of the chain and to change the chain if excessive stretching is detected or if unusual noises from the engine or other symptoms occur.

Fuel system Common Rail

Common rail fuel injection provides more engine power, is quieter, more environmentally friendly and offers better fuel economy, but is more expensive to maintain and repair.

Often in the first years of production, engines tend to have various constructive problems, so it is recommended to choose a car with this engine from 2010 onwards.

Generally, the use of an engine in several models and its long production run is an indication of the quality of the engine and the success of its design.
