Audi S4 is the performance version of the Audi A4, offered mainly as a sedan and Avant estate, with quattro all-wheel drive as standard. In the current naming shift, the traditional A4/S4 line is being phased into the newer A5/S5 family.
The post-2000 B5 S4 used a 2.7-liter twin-turbo V6 with about 265 horsepower, giving it strong tuning potential and a more mechanical character. The B6 and B7 generations (2003–2008) moved to a naturally aspirated 4.2-liter V8 producing around 344 horsepower, available with manual or automatic gearboxes. These models traded turbo flexibility for sharper throttle response and a distinctive V8 sound.
The B8 generation (2009–2016) replaced the V8 with a 3.0-liter supercharged V6 producing about 333 horsepower, paired with manual or S tronic transmissions depending on market. It improved efficiency and balance while retaining strong acceleration. The B9 generation, launched in 2016, switched to a 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 with about 349 horsepower and an 8-speed automatic gearbox. In Europe, later versions used a 3.0-liter V6 TDI mild-hybrid with very high torque and better long-distance economy.
In user reviews, the Audi S4 is often seen as the quiet overachiever of compact performance sedans. Owners like its secure quattro grip, strong engines, quality interior and ability to feel calm in daily use but genuinely quick when pushed. The V8 versions win affection for sound, while newer V6 models are praised for torque and usability. Complaints usually involve expensive maintenance, tight rear space, firm suspension and a driving character that can feel too restrained for enthusiasts seeking drama.
