BMW X1 2009 xDrive20d (E84)

BMW X1 2009 2.0 diesel description

Crossover / SUV BMW X1 2009 xDrive20d has been produced from January, 2009 to January, 2012. It has four-cylinder diesel engine with displacement of 2.0 litres, which produces power of 177 horsepower on 4000 rpm and torque 350 Nm (Newton metres) on 1750 revolutions per minute.

This 4-cylinder 16-valve engine camshaft is driven by chain (What is an engine chain and belt? ). Engine has Common Rail fuel system and turbine. The engine meets the Euro 5 emissions standard. Approximate engine life expectancy (mileage until serious repairs are required) for this engine is between 220 000 and 370 000 kilometres. Note that engine life can be longer or shorter depending on maintenance.

The BMW N47 engine is sometimes called the worst BMW engine because of problems with the timing  ...  This BMW X1 2.0 engine oil type is 5W-30 and oil capacity is 5.2 litres.

BMW X1 2009 xDrive20d has AWD (all wheel drive) (power is automatically distributed between the wheel axles) and manual gearbox with 6 gears. BMW xDrive is a proactive all-wheel drive system without a center differential that engages before the vehicle becomes unstable, unnoticed by the driver. Torque is distributed between the axles via an electronically controlled multi-plate clutch located in the transfer case. Most of the time, the clutch is partially locked and power is transferred to both axles in a 40/60 front/rear ratio, but the system is capable of sending 100% of the torque to either axle. At high speeds or when parking, for example, the clutch is disengaged and all power is sent to the rear wheels. DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) also brakes the wheels individually to regain traction and assist in cornering.
BMW X1 2009 xDrive20d accelerates to speed 100 kilometres per hour in 8.4 seconds. The maximum speed of this car is 205 km/h.

In combined cycle (city and motorway), the BMW X1 2009 xDrive20d fuel consumption is 5.8 litres per 100km (17.2 km/l) - this is one of most fuel efficient BMW X1 2009 - 2012 versions, fuel consumption in city - 7 l/100km, highway fuel economy - 5.1 l/100km. Fuel tank capacity is 61 litres or 16.12 gallons, which gives a mileage up to 1040 kilometers without refueling in urban cycle and even up to 1180 kilometers on highway.
According to user reviews, this BMW real everyday fuel consumption is 6.7 litres per 100 km, which is 16% more than the manufacturer's stated. More - Real BMW X1 fuel consumption.

With the same engine there are also three other BMW X1 versions - with rear wheel drive and manual gearbox (BMW X1 2009 2.0 sDrive20d MT), and with rear wheel drive and automatic gearbox (BMW X1 2009 2.0 sDrive20d AT), and with automatic gearbox (BMW X1 2009 2.0 xDrive20d AT 4x4) available:
  • BMW X1 2009 2.0 sDrive20d MT is more dynamic - it reaches 100 km/h 0.3 seconds faster (in 8.1 seconds), but manufacturer's fuel consumption is lower by 0.5 litres per 100 km or 9 % - 5.3 litres per 100 km, whereas users reported real fuel consumption is similar - 6.7 litres per 100 km
  • BMW X1 2009 2.0 sDrive20d AT manufacturer's fuel consumption is similar - 5.9 litres per 100 km, whereas users reported real fuel consumption is higher by 0.8 litres per 100 km or 12 % - 7.5 litres per 100 km
  • BMW X1 2009 2.0 xDrive20d AT 4x4 manufacturer's fuel consumption is higher by 0.4 litres per 100 km or 7 % - 6.2 litres per 100 km, whereas users reported real fuel consumption is higher by 0.8 litres per 100 km or 12 % - 7.5 litres per 100 km

Engine reliability and common problems:

The BMW N47 engine is sometimes called the worst BMW engine because of problems with the timing chain, which tends to stretch at 100 000 km. In addition, the engine has to be removed from the car to replace the timing chain. The cause of the timing chain problem was reportedly eliminated for engines produced after 2015. Also, the crankshaft damper on this engine tends not to last very long. Cracks between the cylinders tend to appear due to overheating of the engine.
Overall, this engine can last around 220,000 to 370,000 km if properly maintained, using the correct quality oil and fuel, and carrying out regular checks and maintenance.
The engine has hydraulic valve tappets (lifters), which provide quieter operation and do not require periodic adjustment, but are more complex in design and can cause serious engine damage in the event of failure.
Engine displacement 1995 cm3
Number of cylinders 4
Bore (cylinder diameter) 84 mm
Stroke length (piston move) 90 mm
Compression ratio 16 : 1
Camshaft drive Timing chain

Chain motors are considered more reliable, chain replacement usually is required less often than a timing belt, but they are often louder and vibrate more.

Timing chain change interval 100,000 km (recommended)

Sometimes manufacturers do not specify timing chain replacement intervals and design chains for engine life. However, once the recommended change interval has been reached, it is recommended to periodically check the condition of the chain and to change the chain if excessive stretching is detected or if unusual noises from the engine or other symptoms occur.

Fuel system Common Rail

Common rail fuel injection provides more engine power, is quieter, more environmentally friendly and offers better fuel economy, but is more expensive to maintain and repair.

Start of production (year) 2007
Duration of production 17 years

Often in the first years of production, engines tend to have various constructive problems, so it is recommended to choose a car with this engine from 2010 onwards.

Generally, the use of an engine in several models and its long production run is an indication of the quality of the engine and the success of its design.
